My Grandchildren’s Favorite Book
I first purchased this book in a book store after my grandson’s first birthday in 2014. When reading this to him, I gave each character their own “bluesy” accent. It wasn’t long before he’d want me to read it over and over again and would try to mimic me. We both had fun reading this and both of us would be laughing. One of the pages was accidentally torn so I purchased a second “Acoustic Rooster” book and allowed him to take this one home so, I purchased a third “Acoustic Rooster” book to keep at my house. There have been two more grandchildren and this book is our favorite. I love reading it to them. I highly recommend this book.

Terrifically fun introduction to concepts of jazz!
Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band is the story of Acoustic Rooster, a jazz guitarist with a goal of making it big. When Farmer announces the annual barnyard talent show, through which he hopes to find the farm's best band, Rooster is determined to join a band so that he can compete. Alexander has written this in impeccable rhythm and rhyme, but that's not what stands out about the cleverness of the story... Alexander has also managed to base his barnyard musicians on real-life musicians, such as Duck Ellington and Mules Davis! Young readers can learn about the famous musicians, as well as some of their songs, various musical instruments, and the history of jazz (all covered in more detail in the backmatter).

Great story about not giving up on your dream
I read this to my daughter at the local library and thought it would be a great book to buy and gift to her kindergarten class after reading it to them for her birthday. They all enjoyed it as much as we did the first time. It's fun and catchy and parents will love the references to jazz greats, such as Ella Finch-gerald!
