African Textile Patterns Paperback – February 14, 2013

This book contains 6 pages of text with photos and 109 full page photos of some African fabrics. Most are close up photos so you cannot see the beauty of the whole piece of cloth. I bought this book because it claimed to "explain about the significance of the patterns". The book contains very little helpful information. Each page has a 1-2 line description such as: "This pattern of circles might be a representation of oranges." "this design comprises flowers with a zigzag pattern."Nice photos - not much information is shared.

As the other reviewer wrote, the many lovely patterns are cropped way too tightly, resulting in almost all of the patterns except for about 4 of the very small simple repeat patterns to be cut off so that a single complete design module that repeats across the fabric composition cannot be seen. This is a terrible photo-editing choice that ruins the experience of viewing the Ankara textile designs. Every page I turned resulted in me becoming more infuriated. Imagine looking into a tiny mirror and never being able to see your entire face, but only being shown the same incomplete portion of your face each time. The designs are shown flat, not in any context like as dresses you would find in an expensive Vlisco book. Save up and buy one of the overpriced African wax fabric books instead.Also, the limited introduction does a good job of Columbusing with detailed examples of how people of European descent have coopted Ankara fabric prints.

This book is rubbish! It only shows close up pictures of easy to find Ankara fabrics. The pictures are also so close that the repeat parttern cannot be seen. There are not special 'African' fabrics and no information to go with the photographs. A waste of my money.

Last 2 pages were glued shut so I didn’t know there was meant to be a CD with it 🙁

the book did not impress me,the selection of the illustrated fabrics is not special and the cutouts shown are far too small

My mum loved the gift. It's mainly photographs of the patterns. Lovely to look at.
