A very good intro, excellent visuals and glossary, a tad Eurocentric.
This book has a slightly misleading title--it's primarily European and American. You'd not find much here in how to read Japanese or Burmese architecture, except insofar as the current Western style dominates world buildings. The selection of structures is quite good, the drawings are very good, as are the photos. The glossary of terms is very useful. This book is most useful for a general reader interested in architecture or for students taking an intro class that covers architecture.

An Excellent Guide to the world of Architecture
This provides a detailed and visually pleasing guide to the majority of architectural formats throughout the world. As a PhD Medieval Archaeology student, this provided useful insight into interpreting medieval castles and churches/cathedrals. The key strength of this book rested in its structured approach to interpreting architecture, with numerous sections of individual aspects of buildings such as roofing materials, mouldings, doorways, and arches being particularly interesting. However, the reason this book did not get 5 stars was that it lacked specific details on classical and medieval architecture. This can be expected, but as an architecture book, one would expect significant detail to be given to the cathedrals etc.Visually, the clear and concise drawings are pleasant to look at, and the descriptions of each architectural feature are sufficient in detail and can be easily understood. This is an excellent guide to architecture in general, just be aware that some details (albeit minor) may be lacking. If you are a medieval or architectural historian, this is a useful general guide to architecture, though for specific detail on more refined forms of architecture such as Roman, Greek, Renaissance etc, perhaps you should look elsewhere. Otherwise, this is an excellent book that will more than suffice for anyone with even a meagre interest in architecture.
