SIMPLE TESTS: THEY DO WORK
BACKGROUND:I purchased a bunch of these for food storage. I was already planning on using gas displacement with argon, but thought that adding these would be good for long term. I saw some negative reviews that made me uneasy. I also saw some postings saying that these are supposed to get hot when absorbing oxygen, but didn’t for them. I decided to do some experimenting to see if they do work.THE EXPERIMENTS:Heat Reaction-I took an entire pack of 20 and opened the package and placed a digital thermometer inside. After 10 minutes of no increased temp, I was sure I had wasted my time with these... I came back in approx 30 minutes and noticed that the temp had jumped to almost 80 deg F. Starting temp was 68 deg F.Vacuum Container-I took these 'slightly warm' packs and decided to test the 'vacuum theory’ (that the oxygen absorbed by these guys should cause a vacuum in a closed container). I grabbed four quart canning jars and placed one pack in jar 1, two in jar 2, three in jar 3, and four in jar 4. The following morning, EVERY JAR HAD A HEAVY VACUUM, *FYI: ambient temp remained the same*. The lids were very hard to pop off- harder than opening pressure-cooked foods.Flame Extinguish-I cracked the seal on each jar, one at a time, and inserted a lit bbq lighter. The flame was extinguished before even entering into the neck of the canning jar, even with the jar that had only one packet in it. I tried this flame test earlier, with the packets in the jar for only ½ hour or so, and the flame would not extinguish. It took a while for the absorbers to do their magic. Conclusion:One 300cc packet, even after being exposed to air for at least 30 minutes, has enough absorption capability to remove plenty of oxygen from one quarter gallon of air (probably even more, but I didn’t test for that). It removed enough to make a very tight seal on the jars, and more than enough to snuff a flame. These things DO work, regardless of what people are saying. I will be buying more.

Dry Goods Storage Solution
Good price, and well sealed from the air. When storing any dry goods at camp that may not be used for a while, the air in the bucket needs to be eliminated from above the food. These packets do the job perfectly. Check out Home Depot for their basic 5 gal plastic buckets, add a Gamma Seal screw top lid (Home Depot) with some of these packets and you have a storage system that is reasonable in price and can be used for years to come. Gamma Lids were made for storing pet food in standard buckets, but they work just as well for human food. These packets extend the shelf life by years and years. They do need to be replaced after frequent openings.
