Q: I’m confused about this mill. if you already have a mk-iv mill, why not just turn the log 90 degrees and cut another slab to form an edge and so on?

Squaring the timber with this mill is easier than using the mk-iv because squaring your ladder to your first cut while also getting it straight and level takes time. The edging mill is quick and accurate. Also, I’ve used it to mill posts efficiently. Say you’ve got a 12” wide first cut with the mk-iv and you’re making 4x4 posts. You can make 4 cuts with the edging mill, switch back to your mk-iv, set the depth to 4” and after your cut you’re left with 3 4x4 posts. I hope that made sense. My point is, the mill is quick, easy, accurate and have more uses beyond just squaring the timber.

Q: Minimum bar width? Granberg's site says "...and some of the bars on the smaller saws are too narrow to mount the chainsaw mill's clamping brackets..."

You may have to angle the chainsaw a bit to prevent the clamping bolts from tightening down the saw chain in the bar groove. I have a Husqvarna 450 with 20" bar and it works juat fine with the mini-mill.

Q: How do you get a straight first cut with it?

When setting up for the first cut place the guide rail or plank on the log and secure. The guide rail must project at least 6 inches beyond the ends of the log so that the saw will leave the cut level and even. This basic or first cut determines the accuracy of all later cuts. Make sure it is true and that will help produce the maximum amount of lumber from the log.

Q: I have an older granberg mini mill and i need new "v rails" for saw guide. can they be purchased seperately?

I love making my own lumber!

This is a great jig for beams and a first cut for a large mill. It doesn't take a large saw to run and is easy to set up for your first cut. I like the larger mill for dimensional lumber but this is my go to for edging after using the larger mill. You can use this for all the milling but it takes more time to reset it for each cut. I usually take all of the slabs, sandwich them together, then set my edge mill up to finish up the slabs. I run a 372 XP Husky on it but a smaller saw would do just fine. I also use a ripping chain on a 20 inch bar.
