Yo-Yo & Yeou-Cheng Ma, Finding Their Way: Amazing Asian Americans

My daughter used this book for her homework to prepare her presentation of Yo-Yo. It was a little bit difficult for her, since she was in second grade. But she could understand what Yo-Yo is and how different he is from other musicians after reading this book. Thank you

I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of this enchanting book. Yo-Yo Ma and his sister Yeou-Cheng have an amazing story of perseverance. They were raised by strict Chinese parents who provided love and discipline, but each managed to chart a unique course, finding a voice apart from their parents' ambition. Ai-Ling Louie tells this story well (and provides helpful footnotes to explain words like "prodigy"). Although the Ma's story is a complex one -- from China, to France, to the United States -- she keeps her eye on the plot. The Ma children were extraordinary, but the tale of being true to oneself while honoring your family of origin is universal. Cathy Peng's charming illustrations -- both realistic and whimsical -- are the perfect complement to Ms. Louie's writing. I have given my grandchildren Ms. Louie's other books and this one is on its way to their house.

This is a nice biography of two very talented people!

expensive book for "I Can Read" quality and size

What a beautifully written and illustrated book this is and that it is written for children should not deny it from adult reading, for, as the bookflap says, the famous musician fulfilled his dream, ie his father's dream, while his sister fulfilled her own. A lesson for all of us and for our children and grandchildren as well. What a unique path Ms Louie took by exploring Yo Yo's family's path to his accomplishment and ultimate success. I can't wait to read this book to my grandchild and her classmates who, like Yeou-Cheng, could certainly use a boost to their challenges....
