The Micro Recon 1 features Japanese AUS 8A Steel Tuff-Ex Coated Blade, and a Griv-Ex handle. And a slim-line medium texture USA G-10 for a lighter everyday carry experience.

Pretty good keychain backup blade.
If you’re not a knife snob, you will probably find this little knife to be great and exactly what you were looking for. I do like this knife although I’m not a huge Aus-8 steel fan. This however serves simply as a backup blade on my keychain to my EDC. Not having steel liners would be unacceptable to me in any other instance. The well known triad lockup system is rigid and gives me peace of mind that it will not open unexpectedly in my pocket. The size is probably the reason you want to purchase this knife. The weight to me is excessively light. A few more well placed ounces could have gone a long way without coming close to making it cumbersome on a keychain. The plastic scales (not G10) have an decent grippy texture. The over all quality on my specific Recon 1 Micro was very good coming from Taiwan. For what this knife costs, and what it’s purpose was intended to be. It’s pretty good.

Lost EDC pocket knife, buying a new one
I'm so upset. I have had this knife for five years, and lost it while opening packages at work (I think). Can't find it now.Buying a new one.I had it with a mini keychain carabiner, separate from my keys but in the same (lady) pocket jeans. Mostly used for opening boxes. Depending on the circumstances, I would throw it in my backpack, handbag, pocket jeans, checked luggage, etc.Very handy. I have been able to strip wires, too.Only con I can think is that the knife is so small that the thumb screw is in the way when sharpening. So I couldn't sharpen it fast. After five years, the locking mechanism had been holding as strong as when I first got it. The black coating was "scratched" from first uses, but no big deal. The overall functionality of the knife stayed as "new".Great knife. So, yeah, I'm upset that I lost it.

Excellent
I purchased the Micro Recon 1 spear point knife, the smallest in the Recon series. This version is so small it's almost funny, but this is an extremely effective keychain or pocket knife for basic tasks like opening packages and basic utility around home or at work. This is not the knife you buy to defend yourself, hunt, or camp, but it is worthwhile to own. We all know we look super cool opening our Amazon packages with a massive five inch folder, but sometimes we just need the basics, and this is it.The grip is decent for a small knife. This knife does not have a pocket clip, but the knife is so small it is completely unnecessary. The blade is AUS-8 which is good middle of the road steel that will resist corrosion and retain an edge for awhile, but easy to sharpen when you need to. All I did was a quick strop on the edge and was able to shred paper with ease. There is jimping molded into the handle for your thumb and index finger. Lockup is excellent and there is a torx screw to adjust the blade if needed. My blade is centered perfectly. The handle is grippy and though I am a fan of G10 handles, this little knife simply doesn't need it.I recommend picking one of these up. I will probably buy one of it's "big brothers" in the Recon line in the near future.

Finally, a Challenger to the Lady Bug
Most key-chain knives are cursed with poor workmanship or inferior steels. Most buyers don't want to pay as much for a keychain knife as for a Walmart-sourced 4" Buck 110 Folding Hunter. But the truth is, apart from materials costs, the labor and machine time involved in making a good tiny knife are almost as much as in making a good small to medium knife. Here is the Micro Recon 1's main target and competition: Spyderco Labybug 3 Plain Edge Knife, Foliage Green .I posted some quick comparison pictures showing the Micro Recon 1 and the Lady Bug side by side. Both are fine, fine knives, but in terms of recommending them to a friend, I would recommend the Micro Recon 1 over the Lady Bug with a couple of exceptions I will list at the end of this review.First, I like the fact that the Micro Recon 1 is not just plastic welded (or glued, I don't know which) together. While I have never heard of handle failure in "one piece" (no fasteners) Zytel and similar plastic handled knives, the "what if" guy inside me would rather have both. (Note that there is a tiny, almost invisible "join seam" on the Lady Bug I have, indicating that it wasn't carved out of a single piece of fiberglass reinforced plastic, but was "put together" during assembly.)Second, I like the superior Tri Ad lockback mechanism. Basically, the lockback spring doesn't have to serve "double duty" as both a stop block and lock latch like it does on traditional lockback designs. Instead there is a pin that the blade "stops" against (just like the pin on a liner lock) THEN the lock spring hooks in on the other side of the pin. So all the lock spring has to do is prevent accidental unlocking, not also hold the blade in position.Third, the "faux" G10 (you could have fooled me, but CS's website states this is not actual G10) scales have a nice grip. (Amazon's product description is pulled from the standard size Recon 1 series, check the Cold Steel website to confirm for yourself if you need to.)Fourth, the finger indentation helps locate your bottom finger (and keep it from sliding forward) while the slight rockered area on the opposite side forms a natural resting place for your thumb. (The notches on the Spydie hole on the Lady Bug form a nice thumb rest on that knife but there is no finger guard on the bottom.)Both the Lady Bug and the Micro Recon 1 use good steels - VG-10 (a little more fashionable) in the Spydie, AUS-8 in the Cold Steel. Both seem very precise - no blade wobble (unlike my similar sized Bucklite key chain knife, which wobbles). The cutting edge on the Micro Recon 1 is 1/8 of an inch longer as the bird flies, but actual cutting edge is probably a tad longer since the Micro Recon 1 has more "belly" or curve in the blade.I give a _slight_ nod to the Micro Recon 1 in terms of safety, since I have had large hole openers catch on pocket stuff and begin to open on their own, and never a similar problem with a thumb stud operated folder. (The hole is big and way out there on most "hole" style opener designs, while most thumb studs are relatively close to the handle and less likely to catch on stuff.) For even more pocket safety, the thumb stud on the Micro Recon 1 can be removed. There is sufficient exposed blade remaining for easy gripping for two handed opening, or the blade can be "flicked" out with a snappy wrist action, single handedly.I give a _slight_ nod to the Micro Recon for the black finish, which calls a _little_ less attention to the blade if you use it to cut a thread off a jacket at a dinner table. The black finish is also more corrosion resistant, not a big plus for the exposed portion of the blade, but a big plus for the portion hidden by the handle at the "axis."All in all, a GREAT addition to the key chain knife niche; there aren't many contenders in this division. Please note that use on a key chain is purely optional, and my recommendation would be to use a beaded keychain instead of the included split ring if you want to attach this to a key chain ( Flexible Bead Keychain. Nickel Finish (Pkg/288) . Other locations would be behind a lanyard I.D. or on a re-cycled lanyard (with a breakable beaded keychain) as an alternative to a fixed blade neck knife, which are illegal in most jurisdictions. Also if you run out of pockets or are out running, this will fit in your sock without bagging it down. (Yes, I am reminded of the incident in Shogun where they search for knives on the Spaniard Rodriguez and miss several, much to the chagrin of the captured Englishman, anjin-san Blackthorne.)The Micro Recon 1 is also available in Tanto blade profile. Now for the pros, some big pros, of the Lady Bug:+ Available in colors. The brighter colors make them easier to find if you drop them.+ Available in H1 which won't rust in saltwater.+ Available in ZDP exotic high tech steel.+ Available with full serrations, excellent for cutting seat belts. (Used to be available in partially serrated edition, but not sure if still offered.)+ Available with "hawks bill" blade. You won't be disappointed in either knife, but I lean towards the Micro Recon 1 right now.

Sturdy, good blade for all purposes.
This thing is holding up more than a year later after HEAVY use. Countless times taken camping:- Widdling- Skinning- Cutting food- Cutting rope- Every day useIt's still holding a decent edge! It's not razor sharp by any means, but this is a fantastic extra-small knife for the price. Always have it on me, no exceptions.
