Very useful for all oncologists, quite useful for all physicians too
Its not common to find a reputed international oncology textbook/handbook adapted to address the Indian or South Asian reality. South Asian editions were common though, to make them friendlier for the Indian pocket (dollar @75 INR makes them a necessity). So, when I got this Bethesda Handbook of Clinical Oncology, South Asian edition, it was a pleasant surprise. So-called international protocols are, usually, based upon data collected from the western population - and treatment according to such protocols, quite often, are not suitable for our patients. This handbook attempts to address that issue.A team of oncologists from different specialities came together to thoroughly edit this well-established handbook to suit our reality. A commendable endeavour, indeed. What's more heartwarming is the fact, that the majority of the contributors to this edition are young - established experts indeed, but young enough to walk the uncharted path - and they were guided by a team of reviewers, who are clearly among the most reputed experts in their fields. And the final result is truly awesome. This book can be of immense help to all physicians who deal with cancer patients. Practicing oncologists can use this one a ready reckoner - in the moments of confusion, as well as to brush matters up. Oncology residents can use this to sum up their arduous studies from the heavier textbooks. And, very importantly, residents from other specialities (surgery, gynaecology, medicine or otolaryngology, orthopedics etc) can use this book to know about the usual protocol of management of patients suffering from cancer. We all know that the management of cancer is a multidisciplinary approach. It is quite important that physicians, who are getting training in other specialities, should have some in-depth knowledge about the modalities and protocols of cancer management. This book should help. Also, quite often, the initial stages of cancer are managed by other specialists, who are not trained in oncology. And, in our country, a lot of ailments suffered by the cancer patients, particularly in the advanced stages, are managed by non-oncologists, because access to an oncology set-up is not always easy. So, every practicing physician should have some kind of grasp on the basic cancer management protocols. This book is the right one to start with.Overall, very important job - and a difficult job too - quite well done. Kudos to the young editor of this special edition, Dr. Sayal Paul.Dr. Bishan BasuHead, Department of RadiotherapyCalcutta National Medical College

Crisp and compact - the way a handbook should be
Dr Sayan has done a great job in making available to us the Indian edition of the acclaimed Bethesda Handbook of Clinical Oncology. Very useful ready reckoner which every practising medical oncologist and radiation oncologist must keep handy in the clinic. I would say it would be a useful revision tool for the oncology student.
