In 2004 the USPS issued this stamp honoring the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Air Force Academy, located near Colorado Springs, Colorado. After the U.S. Air Force was separated from the Army in 1947, Congress authorized the establishment of a school to train Air Force officers.
