Excellent 3/8" Torque Wrench Choice!
When I was looking to add a couple torque wrenches to my tool kit, I was a little concerned about this less-than-reviewed model. Turns out, there was nothing to be concerned about. As you're probably aware, shopping for a torque wrench, quality matters. CDI is kind of an off-shoot of the well recognized SnapOn brand, but at a comparatively less expensive price. This was the grade I was going for...somewhere in between a cheap tool (better than say, Craftsman) and less the professional mechanic option...and this one has fit the bill. When you start considering where torque wrenches begin and end in their capabilities, it's important to have a good range. It's also well known that torque wrenches are more accurate in the middle of their specified range, less so at the ends of the rated ranges. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, so more than likely, you're looking at least two torque wrenches if you're going to work on a vehicle...the most common application for a torque wrench. For me, the two torque wrenches I settled on were a CDI 30-250 foot pound 1/2" drive 2503MFRPH and this CDI 10002MRPH. This unit gets me from around 12 foot pounds up to about 80 foot pounds, values commonly found on smaller bolts and nuts. The other wrench gets me upwards of 50 foot pounds up to a good 200 foot pounds, used for larger nuts, lug nuts and bolts. I've found that they compliment each other quite well and really don't have anything that I haven't been able to torque with the ranges these two wrenches provide. As far as accuracy, I don't have any professional testing equipment or anything...but it feels about right to me. I've torqued plenty of bolts that hold liquids and haven't had leaks or strips, as well as precision torquing on things like hubs without issue. So I guess that's what really matters...results, right? Some people might find it a pain to convert to inch pounds, when most everything is stated in foot pounds...but I convert it once, write it down in my maintenance manual and never have to figure it out again. My certification sticker was about 6 months old when I purchased, so I imagine it sat on a shelf for awhile...but six months wasn't going to bother me. It's held up for more than a year with good care and I don't see any problems in the future, aside from maybe a recalibration every once in awhile.Overall, I think this is a good choice for a value priced, low to medium strength torque wrench. If you're looking to fill out that lower range, don't overlook this model.Edit: I also added the 1/4" drive 20-150 in/lb to my tool kit as well. When I acquired my ATV, I needed some lighter torque, so this was a perfect driver for this application. I was glad to see these CDI wrenches still being sold! My wrenches have held up for many years now, too!
