The Magic Circle

This book kept me engaged and left me in awe. I do not care to read about the supernatural. Specifically, anything relating to demons or the devil. However, I would recommend this book based on its ability to keep me engaged and give vivid details. Their are descriptions that are most often left out of other books, that I found in this one.

米国の作家、Donna Jo Napoliによる、ヘンゼルとグレーテルに出てくる魔女にまつわる前日譚(prequel)です。もとは貧しい農婦で産婆だった女性が、病を癒すヒーラーとして魔術を身につけ、そして悪い魔女に身を落とし、お菓子の家を自力で作ってくらしていると、親に捨てられた姉弟がやってきて。。。あとはだれもが知るグリムの物語になるのですが、魔女と呼ばれた女性の心の葛藤や苦悩がうまく描かれていて、大変美しい物語になっています。アメリカ英語では、良い魔女はsorceressと呼ばれ、悪魔に捕まったとたんwitchになってしまうなど、原書で読んでよかったとおもいました。1993年初版で、本書は1995年のPuffin版で、Leo and Diane Dillonによるイラストが表紙を飾っています。金原瑞人訳による日本語版は、「逃れの森の魔女」というタイトルで出版されています。金原氏が新聞のエッセイで興味を持ちました。記事ではヘンゼルとグレーテルは日本では兄妹なのに、欧米では姉弟のことが圧倒的に多く、本書も姉弟の設定だということでした。パロディという紹介でしたが、風刺やアイロニーの要素はありません。ただただ、魔女役の女性の心情に触れる美しい物語でした。

A retelling of the fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel, but this time from the witch's point of view. Great book, came in as described.

I read this as an adolescent and it stuck with me forever. Wonder "underpinnings" tale behind the "witch" of Hansel and Gretel.
