Hollywood Blockbuster Gives Taste of Rome
We rented this Hollywood classic while we were in Rome as it was recommended in our Rough Guide to Rome. While it is not all that accurate historically (according to our guide book), the film does give you a sense of the power, corruption, and organisational mastery of ancient Rome, as well as an idea of the famous architecture. There are some really disturbing scenes in the Colosseum of lions mauling Christians and martyrs being burnt at the stake. While not nearly as gruesome as modern-day films such as Reservoir Dogs (which I haven't seen), this film gives the viewer an idea of the spectacle of Rome, the size of the armies, the discipline of the Praetorian guard, Emperor Nero's hedonism (played magnificently by Peter Ustinov), and also provides some lighter relief with two beautiful women, one a slave and one an adopted hostage, who are the love interests of two men.

Amazing
I first saw this movie when I was a kid. It stayed with me forever and I just shared it with my husband as he never saw it. Revelation. I recommend this movie to anyone interested in a bit of history. Maybe theatrical, but still very good.
