Firstly, it's important to recognize that this is a NVMe to U.2 adapter -- NOT SATA. So why U.2? For most of the newer servers with plug-in drives U.2 is an option over SATA and is able to leverage the benefit of NVMe drives -- much higher speeds and access. I'm actually using this with an ASRock Rack 1U server that supports 10 U.2 drives and utilizes PCIe 4.0. With this configuration I was able to sustain 7.14GB Sequential Reads according CrystalDiskMark 8 (compared to the typical 0.5GB SATA speeds that one would normally get). Additionally, the nominal temperature is about 30 C. I've bought over 16 of the Vantec adapters and will continue to buy them.

Bought 4 of these to use on a Dell server. Tried 2 of them with 2 different NVMe SSDs (WD SN720 and Samsung PM981) to no avail. Bought a StarTech adapter and tried with the same NVMe SSDs which was detected immediately (drive caddy lights lighted up) and was also detected in vSphere 6.7.

We bought 7 of these and none of them work in our new Dell server.

The build quality of this device is really good. Come with all the accessories and hardware, even a small little screw driver is a plus.But the reason why I gave 2 stars are 2 reasons,1.) when I open it, one of them is been used , the thermo pad is missing, the casing has a scratch mark right next to the screw hole.2.) the u.2 adapter is not compatible with my QNAP TS-h973AX NAS.
