it worked great on old real copper pennies that i used to tile a fireplace...i do not know how it would react with zinc?

Not alone, but I was designed for non metal surfaces through a double process. They recommend Primo, and I have found no evidence that there is a better one. Amazon does not seem to have it at a reasonable price at the moment, but Dick Blick carries it for &10 or so. It takes very little primer and metalizer.
