New Directions A Season in Hell & The Drunken Boat

Beautiful item, with the original cover art same as first edition, a beautifully written preface by Patti Smith, and of course the wonderful poetry of the great teenage French poet Rimbaud. This original translation from French to English is probably the most accurate. It is not the easiest poetry to understand but is very addictive and it draws you in. Any translation from French to English is always going to be approximate but this translation is superb. Rimbaud is hugely influential and once you become aware of his existence his name comes up so often that you wonder why didn't you know of his work before. He is unknown to the general public and a poet superstar to those in the know. I highly recommend this edition.

My new favourite poem. I bought this 8 month ago, and I’ve read it ten times now. Highly recommended. Everyone should read this by the time they are 23. The English translation is great. The original french is written across from the translation, which is nice for those who speak some french.My favourite line: The thing for me is a very drunken sleep on the beach.

Great translation with an excellent forward.

This is a good little edition of Rimbaud's Season in Hell to have. Patti Smith's preface is entertaining and quite perceptive. The translations by Louise Varèse are not fussy or overly academic, so it reads well. The layout, with pages in French faced by pages in English will be especially appreciated by those who are not fluent in both languages.
