it refers to the size of the length of the needle---1/5 means the needle is 27.3 mm long

Q: Are these needles good for hand quilting?

I don't believe these would be good for hand quilting. The eye of the needle is larger to accommodate several strands of thread or yarn. The needle shaft is wider than most needles to allow it to go through thicker woven materials. I think you would want to use a needle with a thinner shaft and narrower eye to prevent making too larger of a hole in the fabric. I think your best bet would be to purchase hand quilting needles.

yes these are good for that another brand of embroidery needles that I've found work really well for me is the brand clover.

Since they are intended to be used with floss these eyes are actually larger and easier to see. I am about your age and terrible eye sight and I can see these. If you order them and they don't work for you we are happy to take them back. Hope that helps! Raylene
