Unscrew the cap located at the bottom directly under the lamp neck. Batteries are dropped in the cap opening.

yes, the black botton is on the base and is clearly seen and it turns on and off the light

Q: where do the batteries go?

At the bottom therebisba compartment screw off then there's a round 3 AAA compartment for batteries replace and allbset

Q: is the lamp rain proof?

I think so. Honestly I thought so when I bought it and we're an area that gets lots of rain. My husband LOVES it - gives off a great deal light. I'm going to get another one for my son's grill since he's used it here at our house and would love one of his own.
