misleading title
This is a large format book printed on great paper with tons of full color images. It is written well and easy to follow the authors idea's and project steps. There are 125 pages in the book. There are about 6 - 8 projects, each with step by step full color images, most using pewter with a couple using copper mesh.My problem with this book is that there is very, very, little about actually stitching on metal. The book should be titled "The Art of Working with Metal." Pages 1-61 cover what fabric to use to back metal, how to heat metal, emboss metal, stencil and paint metal, corrode metal, foil metal, stamp metal, etc. The first mention of stitching on metal doesn't come till page 62, about half way into the book. It resumes on page 64 and again on page 66 (skipping page 63 and 65 for photos). That's it on stitching. The remainder of the book is projects. As if stitching is barely mentioned, what is mentioned regarding stitching on it is extremely basic....run straight stitches on a diagonal, make little circles, wavy lines, etc. (see fourth picture)I personally found no valuable stitching ideas or stitching techniques in this book. If you've never worked with metal and want a basic course in how to texturize it or paint it, this book is for you. If you're familiar enough with metal to know that you can cut out a square and sew it onto fabric, this book will offer you nothing else.

Superb!
I refer to this book time and time again. Not only do I adore the luscious pictures and the creative pieces, but I love the process. After receiving this book and reading it - which I did immediately upon receipt - I had to buy metal. Metal, metal, metal. I bought several different weights. Different colors. Different finishes. I just needed metal. It took a little time for me to get used to the idea of actually sewing on metal - and not freaking out every time I lowered the needle down. But'cha know what? It didn't damage my machine or any needles!I've got to say, I'm hooked. Ann Parr has found a loyal follower - and I don't see that changing. Her work is amazing, the photos are excellent, the instructions are clear. An absolute, definite MUST for anyone who likes metal. If Ann Parr and Margaret Beal were to ever make something together, you may as well hang it up. I'd be in absolute heaven!A+++++

New inspiration within the quilting experience
This book gives you a lot of new inspiration. I think it is new to most quilters that they can actually stitch on metal with their normal sewing machine. It gives you good ideas which can be used for embellishment in scrapbooking or in art quilts.Recommended for those who like to explore new techniques in their quilting and scrapbooking.Onr thing which is missing in this book which most books offers is a ressource list telling you more on where you can buy the stuff used in the projects.

Really helpful book
I am interested in learning to work with metal for my art quilts and this book is a great resource. I've read it twice, and refer to it as I begin each of my experiments. Ann Parr's writing is clear and easy to follow, and she covers everything from supplies to exciting inspiration pieces. An added plus is each finished piece she shows has discussion of the techniques she used, not just pretty pictures to admire. My only criticism is she doesn't have resources to obtain some of the special materials she uses, but since the book was printed in Britain, I guess it would have been difficult to list resources for the U.S. too.

Inispirations
What a wonderful book, full of inspirations and great tips. I probably won't make a specific project from the book, but I appreciate the photographs of artists' works and the instructions and materials lists. The book brings together ideas from many medias and helped me clarify ideas that have been floating around in my head for years. This was a very good purchase for my explorations into metalwork.

The Art of Stitching on Metal
Absolutely the best - very well written with wonderful examples that are quite doable for any art quilter. I've tried several examples pieces successfully and with all of the information provided by the author am assured of good results in adding metal to my art quilts by using my sewing machine. I already knew that I could hand sew metal - but just didn't realize how easy it would be to attach metal using an ordinary sewing machine.

great book to have on hand
So far this has been the only book I've needed to help me understand how to apply metal to my projects/designs. It's full of information. So much so that I went out and purchased a small metal cutting kit from our local craft store. If you want to add something different to your 'cloth' designs and projects...this book is here to help!

The book to get if you're stitching on metal
Great book! As I said in my title ... 'the' book to get if you're stitching on metal.Ann Parr goes into great detail about the ways of manipulating the surface of metal including tarnishing, colouring, using corrosive substances and adding texture. And that's before you've even put it under the sewing machine! The book includes an interesting assortment of projects from panels to boxes, and comic figures to jewellery and a book cover. My only criticism (and it really is minor) is that there's not a suppliers list included, however, I see that the publishers, Search Press, have included a note directing you to their website for suppliers. I've just seen this mention now, so my little niggle may be unfounded.Anyway, I've found the book to be very exciting and would recommend it to anyone.

Yummy!
Yummy, but beware - you will spend money on supplies - oooo the hardship! On saying that there are lots of home products that can be used. Very exciting as you never know what you are going to end up with.
