BOND GIRL

A Great Read for the College Girl
Bond Girl caught my eye with its catchy title and the enormous Christian Louboutin on the cover. Lately, I have found it rather difficult to find books with a reader target of college students. This awkward transitional stage between teen chick-lit to books written for women in their 30s makes it hard to identify with the characters, but Bond Girl was a perfect fit.I was pleasantly surprised as I delved in to Bond Girl. I appreciated the main character, Alex, for her intense drive to succeed, and how hard she worked to become a true member of the Cromwell government bonds desk. Coming straight out of college and into a male-dominated work place is no easy task; it was easy to relate to for any young professional or graduating college student. Although, I foresaw her relationship with Will, the preppy, handsome, coworker from two rows back, the plot twists were surprising and held my interest. I found myself coming to like all of her coworkers by the end of the book; especially, Chick. It was interesting to have a look on the other side of the fence on our economy issues that we are still dealing with today. However fictional, Duffy really put an honest spin on how shocked everyone was, even the people the rest of the world blamed for the problems. My only complaint is about the ending. As the book hit its climax about 80% of the way through, the ending didn't hold the closure I was looking for. Although, it does leave it open to a sequel, so I guess I'll have to eagerly wait and see!Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was a light read, but is perfect to read on the train or between classes. I look forward to reading what Duffy writes next.

BONDS -- WORDS ON PAPER
I very much enjoyed reading Bond Girl. Even from the very specific perspective from which Erin Duffy wrote, I can envision the workstyle and lifestyle in other sectors of the financial industry. I have a better idea of what goes on in my financial advisor's office and surroundings. I was also encouraged to look up things such as "Trapper Keepers," and the "Fibonacci sequence."Even in the 21st Century, we still have plenty of continued practices of indentured servitude such as those endured by Ms. Duffy during her time in the financial industry. Women have it rougher and tougher than men, but young men pay their dues as go-fers, "step 'n fetch-its" and the like. In so much as America itself is no longer a democracy, the subset of Business in America is much more not a democracy. Business chews employees up and spits them up at all levels. Most of us leave the workplace with psychological scars that will never heal and that we will take to our graves. Perhaps writing about those experiences helps to vent and leaven the horror of those years. Most of us have some business version of the old Vietnam statement, "When I die I'll go to Heaven, 'cause I've spent my time in Hell -- Vietnam." i.e. "When I die I'll go to Heaven, 'cause I've spent my time in "The Acme Company."It seems that we all have to pay our dues in the business world, but the "excellent" and admired companies, and "best places to work" have managed to promote an atmosphere that does not allow adolescent, juvenile hazing, moronic high-jinks and the like. Even today viewers rage against the likes of the male chauvinist Joe Kernens of the financial broadcast world (CNBC). Wall Street and its environs have a long way to go before they will ever be fully "cleaned up" from all the filth that continues to wash out of the economic downturn.

It will go into my Reread pile after I get it back from a friend.
I always read negative reviews before positive. I wasn't going to read this at first but SO happy I did!The storyline is very good. Its not a girl meets guy at work and they fall obsessively in love after two days. There is a light romance but not too much to overwhelm you, rolling your eyes saying get real. This is a much more realistic depiction of love as well as the workplace. The novel mostly focus around young (22) Alex and her job on Wall Street, or the "Street" as she calls it. It showcases her relationship with the guys she works with and customers that they serve. (A bit of a spoiler) It's an adorable big brother little sister relationship between the team and they play cute pranks and during down time have funny antics. I laughed in the book, I felt utter anger, and I even dropped a little teeny tiny dried before it hit my bottom lash tear at the end. A good thing about this novel is that her life is not honky dory like countless books out today. She hits a low point, and when she hits a low point, she goes from the Empire State Building all the way down to the subway rails! But never fear! As with any book it is a happy ending, leaving you to imagine whatever you please. While this could possibly be a series since those have been über hot over the past few years, the author did not leave it that wide open when are wondering: well what happened to this, what are they going to do with that, will he ever be seen again, what is she going to do with that?

Great read and good insight into the trading floor
Good read and interesting insight into the trading floor as a graduate trainee. Couldn't put the book down, especially when covering the feelings surrounding the impact of the crash!
