Like taking an expert guided tour of historic New Albany
I bought this book because during my genealogical research I discovered my Benton, Lent, and Bushnell grandparents lived in New Albany during its steam boat building hey day in the 19th century. In fact my great great grandfather William Bushnell Lent was a co-owner of the Phoenix Foundry that did all the mechanical and engine work for the "great ship" Robert E. Lee ( although they had to take it to Kentucky to have the name painted on it when it was finished shortly after the Civil War because of the northern hostility to the name). I was hoping to find pictures of the various houses these family members lived in, but unfortunately they were razed over the years. Thankfully I did find an online picture of Erastus and Hannah Bushnell Benton mansion that later became the Anderson Female Seminary and have the exact location of the William and Martha Benton Lent mansion on Beeler Street, but unless there are pictures still hiding away somewhere, I'm at a loss. But the pictures and in depth stories in this book are fabulous for anyone with an interest in the history of New Albany and felt like I was getting to "know" people my relatives were certainly acquainted with as friends, neighbors, and co-workers. I truly felt like I was on a most wonderful guided tour by the local historical experts David Barksdale and Gregory Sekula.
