Damon Galgut is an excellent writer who narrates skillfully without any intention of teaching or indoctrinating. I appreciate the book has "only" fewer than 300 pages, demonstrating that good books do not measure by the number of pages. On the contrary readers need to get cultural and spiritual nourishment , by learning from other cultures, languages, and traditions, while finding common and universal themes . The book has just won the Booker Award 2021

Lu en anglais - un plaisir réel et bien contente de ne pas m'être arrêtée aux 1ères pages. Délicat pour les sentiments, écriture particulière mais au plus près des sentiments - et belle narration qui suit l'évolution de la situation en Afrique du Sud. Surtout, ne pas chercher à trop en savoir avant d'ouvrir le livre.

Got the book within 2 days. Packaging was good. Cost is also low compared to other sites. Started reading.

I do not have enough good words to say about this book. After reading everything that such wonderful authors as Alice Munro, Philip Roth and and others have written in English literature, the "Promise" surprised me and deeply mesmerized me from the first pages. Although perhaps not a book for everyone, this novel has unique, unconventional style that profoundly captures and moves the reader. This book made me laugh and cry, and re-read many of it's brilliantly written pages few times. Damon Galgut's novel is a true achievement in literature and a tremendous joy to read.
