Just what I've been looking for
I run early in the morning & am so happy to have found a flashlight that not only recharges the battery, but has a much wider range of light. In the past, I've had to aim flashlights directly in front of me in order to watch my foot fall. With this flashlight, I can hold it straight ahead and keep my head up. I feel much safer now since my environment is so well illuminated, plus I know I can be seen better in traffic. I also like that the flashlight isn't heavy and is simple to turn on & off with a recessed push button on the bottom.....no worries about accidentally hitting the off button by mistake. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is I've only been using it for a week so I'm not sure how it will hold up over time, especially on cold, snowy winter runs.

Freeze, dirtball! I'm armed with a flashlight!
I like this little flashlight. I really do. It offers a lot for it's modest price. The light itself is bright (it WILL blind you temporarily if you make the mistake of staring into it) and the case is super sturdy. You can drop it all over the place and it doesn't seem to mind at all. It has five different modes and they are distinguishable from each other. (Not true of all multi-mode lights.) I'll use the high-beam mode 99% of the time. What's the point of using a flashlight at all unless you can see with it? However, if you need light and also need to stretch out the battery capacity, the lower beams come in handy. I wouldn't be likely to ever use the strobe or SOS modes, but I love the zoom focus feature. Sometimes you need to have a pinpoint light to guide you without disturbing others.I REALLY like the option of using either the included rechargeable lithium battery or 3 AAA batteries. At this point, I'm leaning more toward AAA batteries. They're cheap and (with an LED bulb) they give you a good run-time. I feel comfortable with them. The little charger that's included works fine. I've charged it overnight and the red charging light never seems to go off, but the battery charges and that's all that counts. The flashlight is simple to use. The large green button on the end is easy to find and to operate. The size is just right. The shape allows you to maintain a good grip, even when it's wet. The attached wrist strap is strong and long enough to slip easily over your hand. Best of all, it comes in a great Army-green carrying case which closes firmly at four places and has a handy carry strap. The case is padded and you can pack in all kinds of extra batteries. Good set to carry in the car glove compartment. The directions (in English!) point out the "crenellated strike bezel for enhanced self protection." Of course, any object can be used for self-defense and the sharper, the better. I doubt if the sight of me holding a flashlight would strike terror into the heart of an evil-doer, but it could be used to break out a car window in an emergency. For self-defense, I'm going to shine the light in their eyes and hope to blind 'em long enough to give me a head start. With the nice carrying case and the option of using AAA batteries or lithium, I think this is a good deal for the money.Free sample provided for review.

Bright, two power modes, but annoying control
I have quite a few LED flashlights of about this size - all the others take 3 AAA batteries. This one can take 3 AAAs or the Lithium-Ion battery included (along with a charger). I see another reviewer expressed doubts on the labeled capacity of the LiIon battery - I'm not qualified to comment on that - but the battery does work. The charger is minimal and I found the fold-out prongs tended to collapse when inserting in a socket, but it also works. I generally find that I prefer alkaline batteries in my flashlights as all of the LiIon batteries tend to discharge themselves a bit too quickly. The light the HYLLEX throws is indeed bright, whether powered by either kind of battery, I found it a bit weird that at its smallest spot focus what you get is a crystal-clear image of the square LED emitter surface, something I've never encountered before. Pull the barrel out a bit and you get a nice spot without much of a "donut shadow", and pulled out all the way it's quite diffuse. The distributor sent me one for free and asked for a review. There is one very annoying aspect to the HYLLEX that another reviewer also noted - when you turn the flashlight off and then on again later, it starts in the next mode from where it left off. If you're not a fan of blinking lights, you'll also find this irritating as you cycle through the modes until you get the one you want. If it didn't have this quirk, I'd give the HYLLEX five stars.

Multiple modes, includes battery
This water-resistant flashlight is about 5 5/8 in. long and weighs 133 g or 4.7 oz., including the wrist lanyard and AAA battery cartridge, but without batteries. It is made of milled aluminum alloy. The silicone-covered power button on the end cycles through high, medium, low, and strobe modes. The strobe is very disorienting at close range. The light is cool white in temperature and is surprisingly bright. It has a large hotspot, a small corona, and very little spill. It works well for both illuminating large areas and for task lighting. The flashlight takes either one 18650 battery with the plastic sleeve or three AAA batteries loaded into the removable cartridge. A rechargeable 18650 lithium ion battery is included, along with a basic charger. The plastic storage case came cracked but still clamped with the flashlight in perfect condition, so it certainly functions as intended.Hyllex provided a flashlight for evaluation and review.
