Supergirl: Season 1 [Blu-ray]

The new girl in town...
Supergirl gets her own television series in this entertaining reboot of the DC comic by CBS. Kara Zor-El, sent from Krypton by her parents to watch over her cousin (Superman), ends up getting to Earth after her cousin has discovered his powers and is doing just fine. Kara is adopted by an earth family and grows up to young womanhood. Living in National City, she works as a much put-upon executive assistant to Cat Grant, ambitious head of the local media empire. Kara is finally ready to test her own powers; using them will require a significant amount of trial and error.Kara's secret identity as Supergirl is known to her human step-sister Alex, who turns out to have a secret identity of her own. Also in on Kara's secret are reporter James Olsen (friend of Superman) and office mate Winslow Schott. She is also known to a mysterious network of secret agents, who are dealing with the presence of (surprise) multiple aliens on Earth. Kara must learn to work with the network and function at her day job while learning the superhero ropes. Those duties get complicated; it turns out an unsuspecting Earth is already home to a number of nasty aliens who will be opponents for Supergirl.Melissa Benoist is endearing as Supergirl, an earnest but slightly goofy do-gooder who is easy to root for. She has a complicated emotional life, with a reluctant crush on the handsome James Olsen, who has his own (shaky) relationship with another woman. Her work partner Winslow has his own crush on Kara. Her earth family turns out to have its own secrets. This show was bold in pushing its storylines through an adventurous first season. A highlight was a crossover episode with The Flash. The show did well enough with viewers to earn a second season, on the CW network. Recommended as good entertainment.

Has gotten better with each episode.
I'll admit to feeling a little buyer's regret when I first bought the season pass for Supergirl: Season 1... but I certainly don't feel that way now.The show has gotten progressively better with each episode and I've been delighted to see that they're FINALLY connecting a kryptonian to the wider DC Universe - even a version that's different from the comics; neither Supergirl nor Superman should exist in a world where they're the ONLY metahumans/super-powered people around (a flaw in some earlier television shows and film). But not only that, the cast and their characters have gotten better too, becoming more and more three-dimensional as the season goes on; I particularly like how they've shown Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) to be an actual human being with both virtues and flaws; ambitious and driven, but ultimately a decent person - not just the ice queen/business-woman-tyrant stock character I was expecting.Melissa Benoist was cast perfectly. I was a little unsure of her at first... but naw - she's Supergirl; she's a genuine superhero. She and the writers have given the character many of the same core qualities that make Superman great - and I don't mean his powers. Superman remains one of the greatest characters in comics because of WHO he is, not what he can do. And Benoist's Kara has it too: she's a moral, ethical person who has genuine concern and empathy for others. And she has shown a real warmth toward those around her on the show. But at the same time, she's not "perfect" either; she's not one-dimensional. She feels unsure sometimes and gets frustrated and upset like the rest of us. What can I say - Benoist can act and I find myself looking forward to seeing her Supergirl each episode. If you haven't given this show a chance, you should.

Good series
supergirl is a good attempt to start bringing the female superheroes out into the open. Kara Danvers/ Supergirl is a good supehero for DC to try out. Overall the show is a good one, but it really didn't belong on CBS as it did on this freshman season. For the second season it is now on the CW where it really does belong. The biggest problems I have with the show is that, as a male, I feel like only the female characters are really in charge of anything and most of the males are arrogant and wrong or the bad guys. I know it's a 'girl power' show but it is truly very OVERLY feminist to the point of just being very insulting to males. However, the stories are still pretty good and definitely entertaining. Melissa Benoist is perfect for the lead role, too. It's kind of cool also to see Helen Slater make an appearance as Kara's mother (She was the original Supergirl in the film from 1984). Dean Cain is mentioned as her father but he does not make an actual appearance on this season unless you count the introduction where you see them looking up at the sky in the beginning of most of the episodes. You do see him briefly in the second season (at least so far as of this writing). Although they often give reference to her cousin Superman, you don't actually see his face at any time when he makes very quick appearances on a few episodes or Clark's emails going to Kara. However, the second season has been a better season overall so this show is progressively improving. Even Superman finally makes a real and actual appearance in the first two episodes of the series) It is still a lot of girl power (Lynda Carter is the president) but the storylines are definitely better in the second season on the CW. Hopefully this series will continue to fly for a while on the airwaves. It's worth taking a look.

A great discovery!
I wasn't sure when I bought it. Loved the Arrow universe, liked the Flash universe. This one is a great surprise. The series doesn't dwell on Superman popularity. It has enough references to keep the fans interested, but succeeds in creating its own universe with characters interesting and with several layers. Can't wait for season 2.

Bringing' the Super Back!
Blowing the grim and dour monster that Henry Cavill plays out of the water, Melissa Benoist brings an exuberant joy back to our last survivors of the doomed planet Krypton. Supergirl is wonderfully conceived, brilliantly produced, and a heck of a lot of fun to watch.
