Review "A lark of a research project that began in 1989 has led to a new book on a dark and violent stretch in Linn County history....Cory Frye, news editor of the Albany Democrat-Herald, was a 16-year-old junior at West Albany High School when he came across a 1921 Albany High School yearbook at an antique store....More than two decades later, in 2012, Frye began to work on what became 'Murder in Linn County: The True Story of the Legendary Plainview Killings.'"" This is the dawn of a powerful new writer
The writer's obsession with accuracy and the integrity of the true story really came through. The details, which I always crave, kind of astounded me. The characters were brought to life in a way that made me care, good or bad, for them. I can't wait to see what Cory Frye tackles next. Frye is a vital new talent who seems destined to put a dent in the universe.

It didn't quite do it
I thought I would enjoy this book since some of my relatives were in the area at the time and one may have been involved in aspects of the trial. But I've put the book down after fifty-some pages as it seems a laborious exercise of stringing together random tidbits and facts that make for a choppy, unorganized read. Sorry.

Good read though
If you live in the area as I do this book is full of interesting history. If you don’t it is a little miss leading because some of the stories are back and forth between Portland and linn county. Good read though.

I highly recommend it!
The book is very well researched and thought out, while still being incredibly entertaining to read. Cory Frye has managed to humanize all of the parties involved in these crimes, which is hard to find at a time when true-crime sensationalism is at an all time high. I was hanging on the page turns, eager to find out what happened to these people who started out as strangers to me. A captivating, enjoyable read; I highly recommend it!

Great history of the bad guys of Linn county circa 1920
Excellent in-depth factual history of the darker side of rural Oregon in the 1920's with a side order of Sam Spade!

Boring
The book may have been more interesting to me if I lived in that area. The writing style made it very hard to follow what happened.
