- Juniper is a small bushy shrub that on the female tree a bluish cone is produced that looks similar to a berry (hence the name juniper berry). Once a year the berries are plucked from the shrub, dried and ground up to be steam distilled. It is believed Native Americans have used juniper berries as an appetite suppressant.
