Start Here, Start Now: A Guide to Antibias and Antiracist Work in Your School Community

Best Resource Ever!
This book has been such a valuable resource for me. I teach middle school social studies, and creating a supportive and inclusive space is of highest priority and giving space for difficult conversations is necessary. As an educator who worries about how to meaningfully approach and start these conversations and interrupt conversations that are harmful, this book has been invaluable. Not only does Liz explain the thinking behind the approaches, but she provides concrete examples of what to do and say. I learn so much better with examples and this has been so concise (as to not be overwhelming) but detailed. I brought this book to my school's equity team meeting (which I am a part of) and within one minute of talking about its highlights, my principal purchased copies for the other team members and is working to incorporate it staff wide.

Teachers (and everyone else) - Read This ASAP!
Liz Kleinrock has, once again, given teachers exactly what they need. As a classroom teacher herself, Kleinrock understands the importance of providing information and then giving practical ways to implement the concepts. Her work is always delivered in a way that is accessible, inspiring, and energizing. It is so important that we ensure our classrooms are free of bias and racism (two things I'm sure every single person can agree does not belong in our schools) and Kleinrock gives you the tools to do this important work. Whether you are a practiced and experienced ABAR educator or are entering the classroom for the first time, this book will make you better. This is also a great book for coaches, parents, and anyone else working with youth!

One of the best ways to begin THE WORK!
I have a hard time, even as an educator, reading nonfiction. Kleinrock's book is such a pleasure to read. I found the best part to be actionable tasks for educators, those first few concrete steps for folks to take on the road to ABARAO work. There's even advice for STEM teachers and teachers of other contents, who often are left out of the conversation. 10/10 would recommend.

Highly Recommended!
In her new book, Liz Kleinrock honors the title Start Here, Start Now by giving us all a clear and thoughtful "guide" for doing the much needed "Antibias and Antiracist Work" within and beyond our schools. As a white educator, I was struck by how accessible and far reaching the suggestions and ideas are for ALL educators regardless of where they may be in the ABAR process. I am grateful for this book and for the ideas and suggestions that Liz offers each of us with such grace and wisdom!

This book is essential for parents as well
As parents who were working at home with our children during the distance learning period of the pandemic, this book proved invaluable. I only wish it was released earlier! We used it's lessons and conversation starters to open up important and relevant discussions with our kids around race and gender issues. This book enabled us to make significant connections with them to what they were already learning in class and how ABAR work intersects with that. With so many states pushing back right now on critical race theory being taught in K-12 schools, this piece of work could not be a more relevant and necessary tool for parents. We've also gifted this book to the principal of the school our children attend and would encourage others to do the same.

A concise resource for educators
Start Here, Start Now is packed with lots of ideas for students to unpack their own identities, build community with their classmates and help students unpack stereotypes and assumptions about other people. Kleinrock writes ideas and strategies in ways that can easily be modified or adapted for the students in your own classroom. It is an excellent text for those just starting out on the journey or for those looking for some different ways to approach the teaching they already do.
