The Violin Lesson by Simon Fischer

Worth every penny, and then some; if I could give more than 5 stars, I would. I bought this to accompany my violin lessons, at the recommendation of my instructor, whose instructor had recommended it to her.Fischer's writing is extremely clear and easy to understand. He explains everything from a logical perspective, in a way that is fun to read. Ergonomics and physical factors are all explained, and Fischer's approach to exercises and musicality has already improved me as a musician (I play guitar as well).Now, I honestly can't imagine learning the violin without this book, and I'm really glad I bought it.

Good book for the serious violin student

After months of searching for a classically trained violin teacher in the heart of fiddle country, I finally gave up and found out about Simon Fischer's books. He makes some pretty tall claims about his teaching, even coming across a bit like a shopping channel salesman in the youtube ad for his tone production dvd series. However, having read nothing but positive things about his teaching materials and in lieu of a teacher, I ordered this book. Amazing. His claims are 100% factual, at least in my experience. I'm a classically trained guitarist that has been playing violin seriously for about 16 months, and after one paragraph, my tone improved ten fold. A simple oversight in my bow-hold thumb placement also instantly improved my legato playing. Currently devouring the instructions on different bow strokes. He simply has a way of explaining things that is crystal clear. Though pricey at $50, completely worth the money.

I have been playing the violin for a lifetime...it is an extremely nuanced instrument...this is perhaps the best violin book that I have seen! It explains many technical concepts in a very direct straightforward manner! I can't wait to include the companion books in my library! Every journey requires a good navigational aid..this one is superlative!

This is a great book for self-learners and also those with a teacher. I will be using it to open many discussions when I pick my lessons back up after the summer

This book breaks down all the possible issues you may be having that is stopping you from having a beautiful sound. Great for the analytical player.
