Superman 2: Funeral for a Friend

I bought this comic for my dear brother who is a fan of comics. I ordered it just in time for Christmas and chose to pay extra for it to arrive in time which it did! Very satisfied and had a wonderful time seeing my brother open his gift. Thanks so much!-Christen M.

This middle chapter in the death and return of Superman is often overlooked. It's understandable, as very little of the overall story moves forward. But it does serve as a slow interlude while various characters grieve the death of Superman. One of my favorites is an issue about Pa Kent grieving about the death of his son, and seeing images of Clark as a boy growing up. It's a heartfelt, tragic look at a parent blaming himself, unfairly and harshly as parents do, for his son's death. Little moments like these (and not the Doomsday smashing and bashing) are what make this saga so memorable. To be frank, there is a lot of filler and most readers can probably skip this volume, but for any completionist who is out there trying to learn more about DC history and the full event of Superman's death, this is a worthwhile read.

Thankfully, not all three hundred and fifty pages, though. Roughly the first third of it is given to the people around Superman coping with tragedy. After that, there's some action and shenanigans around his body and the finale ends with issues describing the visions of Pa Kent, who've just suffered a stroke and is lying in a hospital. These have a very interesting coloring and were a highlight for me.

Bought Death of Superman for my son for Christmas and he enjoyed them so much (like I did when it first came out) that I wanted to give him the follow up Trades. Great story if you're trying to get the kids of the electronics

Just reads like a lot of filler, honestly. Filled with lots of side story plots that go nowhere. Sets the stage for Superman's return I guess, but that's about it. Could have been a lot shorter.

I am very glad I found this. I was looking everywhere for this graphic novel.

I never thought this would be great but I actually was rather surprised. This was far better than the relatively hollow Death of Superman series. I feel like this was the real meat of the story so far, while the Death of series was just like an intro. I quite enjoyed this one, especially what was going on with Lex Luther and Supergirl. All round good story full of nice characterization.

I was glad to see that DC has finally done a more complete release of the death and return of Superman. This edition contains a few issues not contained in previous releases, particularly Justice League 70, Legacy of Superman special, and Supergirl and Team Luthor special. All in all a good release, but I have a few small complaints about the placement of some things. The Legacy of Superman special placed between just before Man of Steel 21 should probably have been placed after, and the Newstime Magazine special reprinted in the new edition of Death of Superman should have rather been in this volume, specifically between the Supergirl and Team Luthor special and Adventures of Superman 500, just to make the reading order a little more cohesive. Aside from that excellent.
