Product Description In June 2002, Londons West End was taken by storm when Andrew Lloyd Webber presented a new musical phenomenon AR Rahmans Bombay Dreams. This lavish and breathtaking production which combines the glamour of the movies, heart-aching romance and epic spectacle, won the acclaim of audiences and critics alike. It was labelled as Londons "hottest most exotic new musical", "one of the wonders of the West End" and "the best musical since The Phantom of the Opera". Salaam Bombay Dreams is an exclusive and exciting look behind the scenes of the musical and includes footage and interviews with the team behind this spectacular epic. From Madras and Mumbai, to London, you can follow the producer, the creative team and the cast as they bring together this lavish production. Glimpse into the world of phenomenal Indian composer AR Rahman, of magnificent sets, glittering costumes, inspirational choreography, superb script writing and brilliant lyrics. From rehearsal to opening night and a Gala Performance with a visit by Her Majesty the Queen, Salaam Bombay Dreams also features the sights and sounds of the show providing a fascinating journey through this Bollywood musical hit. Set Contains: The documentary Salaam "Bombay Dreams" provides the background behind Bombay Dreams, the Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced musical that stormed London and Broadway stages in 2002 and 2004. Lloyd Webber recounts how he became entranced by the vigorous energy and hypnotic music of India's "Bollywood" musicals, and other members of the creative team, such as composer A.R. Rahman and director Steven Pimlott (but none of the actors), discuss the genesis of the show. The 90-minute main program doesn't have a lot of on-stage footage, but there's plenty of scenes from rehearsals as well as a workshop from when the musical was in its earliest stages. There are also additional performances and music videos among the bonus features, as well as extended interview segments and other featurettes. At a total running time of over four hours, Salaam "Bombay Dreams" is itself about as long as a Bollywood musical, but it's separated into manageable chunks and will be of interest to fans of the show or anyone who wants to see how a stage musical comes together. --David Horiuchi

Interesting Look at the Production
The main feature here is a 90-minute look at the origins of the musical, "Bombay Dreams," and work leading up to its finished production. Among the highlights are hearing to hear how producer Andrew Lloyd Webber came upon the idea, watching A.R. Rahman improvise during recordings (to the distress of his English counterpart in the sessions) and discuss his work, the remarks of the English choreographers to the background, habits and conditions of the Indian dancers (esp. working on concrete floors), and the on-the-fly adjustments made by the director as the musical is rehearsed on the stage. The disc is filled with extras: a ton of interview footage, another featurette on the production, a look at the preparation of a performance for the Queen of England, four songs from the actual performance, and two promotional videos. You'll only wish there were more songs included, but that doesn't take anything away from what's here.Recommended to fans of the show, of course, but also to anyone who is tempted to explore the Bollywood scene. I only had a couple Bollywood DVDs prior to watching this, but I have since ordered more and cannot wait to watch TAAL and others.

Bright, colorful, fun remembrance of a wonderful stage musical!
This is a fascinating documentary on the making of Bombay Dreams, a lovely, lively musical play that was premiered in London and eventually brought to Broadway in a very revised, inferior rendition. Watching this DVD gives us insight into the creation of this unusual show--a stage rendering of a Bollywood style musical. Some of the process is exactly what one would expect of a western musical; some of the process is unique to the composer of Bombay Dreams, Academy Award-winning A. R. Rahmann. As the stage performance of Bombay Dreams was never released on video (please, Andrew Lloyd Webber, we know you taped it so please let us purchase it!) this documentary offers some brief glimpses of the show, even going as far as a couple of almost complete numbers. Right now, this is the only way for those of us who saw the London production to experience it again. A movie version was announced, but three or four years have passed, so it appears it has died on the vine.

Self-indugent backgound story of the production
Anyone who saw the live stage of this musical will be greatly disappointed. As some already has mentioned in their previous reviews, this is not the musical play itself but making of it--hours of documentary of the people who produced this play. Personally, I was not interested in them, nor how this musical was made. When this musical play was still on Broadway, short-lived, was enjoyable enough to have a good afternoon as a matinee show, particularly to a Bollywood lover like myself, but a second-rate musical in terms of quality nonetheless. This musical play was something like Grease--shallow, but enjoyable, and can be watched at times when you need a light entertainment. To make a background film about such a musical is self-conceited in the first place. The DVD description is grossly misleading. There are a three or four live songs and dances included in this DVD, but the filming-style is very outdated looking like as if they were taped in 1950s or 60s--camera never staying still but constantly moving around, focus constantly changing, close-ups and long-shots mixed every second alternately; it even uses a slow-motion in one of the dance scenes. In short, the camera work is too busy to let you identify what really is going on in these segments, to the extent you stop watching it after 5 minutes. In short, although this DVD is cheap, its cheap contents do not deserve your small money.

I was a bit disappointed that this was not a DVD of the musical ...
I was a bit disappointed that this was not a DVD of the musical but rather the making of the musical. There were enough clips from the show to make it entertaining. I surely wish one of the performances had been film,ed for sale.

Great behind the scenes of this theatrical production I.e. the actors/dancers and beautiful music.
I saw Bombay Dreams on the suggestion of concierge of the hotel I was staying at in London many years ago. I have seen several London shows and this was my favorite and most memorable. This DVD captured some of the memories for me.

cheated
I wanted the soundtrack for the play and while i found that it showed this DVD with it so I bought it thinking it was a DVD of the play, when I got it today found out that the DVD was a behind the scenes and making of only not the play. Feel this was kind of misleading. The DVD itself is ok but not at all what I was looking for.

Salaam "Bombay Dreams"
The making of "Bombay Dreams" not the actual theatrical play. A good account of back stange and how the whole play came together. Not a DVD that worth purchasing but definately a good rental.

Not really what I was looking for
I was looking for a film version of the stage performance, this was more of a behind the scenes look at the production. It was still fine, but not really what I wanted.
