These two were born to play together. They are so tight, it is like one man playing two instruments. For me, this is the absolute best of West Coast jazz!

While the music making on these two cd's is breathtakingly inventive and beautiful, the recorded sound is also really wonderful. I was afraid this might be some crap sounding import but it is instead as rich and clear as you could hope for. Great great music lovingly presented in glorious sound. Most definitely some of the best jazz of all time.

a must have for a jazz fan. truly unique combo, short compositions and varied tunes/standards. Chet's and Gerry's playing will not disappoint. The percussion and bass accompaniment is excellent. The recording quality is very good considering the date of the recordings (52-53). a worthwhile purchase

A superb album from the masters of cool jazz.

Ich interessiere mich zwar schon lange für Jazz, doch ist es keine einfache Musik und bedarf meist einer intensiven Aufmerksamkeit!Klassik ist keine Kunst, sondern Handwerk! Natürlich sind die Komponisten Künstler gewesen, aber die diese Stücke heute spielen auch oder erlernen sie etwas strickt nach Noten nachzuspielen?Beim Jazz ist es anders, immer eine eigene Auslegung. Übertragen auf die Malerei würde ich sagen Klassik entspricht einem Bild von Kasper David Friedrichs. Ein exzellenter Handwerker ohne Zweifel, der nahezu fotorealistisch malen konnte, aber wo bleibt die Kunst?Free Jazz würde dann wohl abstrakter Malerei entsprechen.Und da sind wir dann auch bei dem Anspruch.Ich widme mich gerne guter Jazzmusik, wenn sie denn ernsthaft ist und mich verzaubern kann. Das kann verspielter Dixieland z.B. nicht, das ist reine Unterhaltungsmusik für den Hintergrund, die ich nicht mag.Nun ist bei dieser CD irgendwie mein Problem dass die Stücke eben ähnlich verspielt sind. Oft hart an der Grenze zum Kitsch, es fehlt oft an Ernsthaftigkeit. Selbst Stücke die ernst und schwerer beginnen verfallen dann wieder dem Klamauk. Nach der Hälfte der ersten CD sind auch mal zwei Stücke durchgängig ernst, dann dass Nächste aber wieder verspielter Swing.Fazit: Ich will eine ernste Welt umschrieben haben, mannsgenug um mich bei einem Glas Whisky und sinnieren zu begleiten. Ich möchte nicht entspannt zu Hause sitzen und permanent zum Tanzen aufgefordert werden. Kein Kind welches mich am Arm zerrt und spielen will. Ich möchte erwachsene Musik und keine Spielerei. Und das schafft diese CD leider nicht.
