About this item: The imaginative mind of Armando Ramírez transforms scrap metal into a sleek, black and silver chess set. Ramirez collects the leftover metal pieces off a die machine and shapes them into the pawns, horses, and parts of the kings, which also feature cogs from a car's electrical system. The queens are made from screws, cogs and bearings from a car's electrical system. The bishops are shaped from sparkplugs and the towers from cogwheels. The board is made from a metal sheet and features ornate iron wires and bendix caps taken from a car's electrical system. Please note it is the artist's intention not to give his sculptures a fine polished finish, therefore smudges and scratches may be present. - Components may vary slightly in size and form - Features a rustic, rugged finish About our Artist: Born in a Mexican town famed for its traditional artistry, Armando Ramirez dreamed of creating something new. 'As a child I enjoyed inventing toys, and soon yearned to create a unique style of art. Environmentally enamored, I now transform recycled goods. I began to craft figures from scrap and discarded mechanical parts, mostly from cars and bicycles. Thanks to the creativity that God gave me, today I have an enjoyable and better way of life.'

Worth it!
I bought this as a gift for my husband. This is probably the coolest gift I have ever bought. It arrived packaged very well and the pieces are each individually wrapped and slightly unique. It is a beautiful set for a modern home. We have left it as a centerpiece to our table ever since my husband opened the gift last month. We love that these are handmade from recycled auto parts, and this feels like a really special piece of functional artwork that we will cherish for years to come. The only complaint is that the pieces are metal on the bottom and after playing a few games we noticed light scratches forming on the chess board, so I bought some felt to apply to the bottom of the pieces. Other than that, this chess set is absolutely wonderful. If you are thinking about getting this as a gift, just do it...It is worth it!

I love this set but the shipping and arrival of this ...
Uh, WOW......I love this set but the shipping and arrival of this really cool set ruined the experience of opening a $200+ chess set.1st, the board which can easily bend, was shipped on it's side w/ little to no padding in a box 4 times its size. Upon opening, the 1st thing I had to do was bend the board back into shape at the edges to make it reasonably presentable. BTW, the top of the board is beautiful and I STRONGLY recommend buying little 1" furniture pads for each piece to preserve its luster. The 1st move of the 1st piece scratched the heck out of the finish.2nd, the pieces were 'bundled' upon shipment which resulted in many if not all being heavily chipped, and scratched.Sorry NOVICA but I give the set a 5 on design as I love it, I'd give the delivery process a 0 if I could. Hence the 1-Star.See attached pix and given it's a 25 lb package, I'm going to cut my losses, play a game of checkers and tell my fellow players and guests the REALLY poor finish on 80% of the pieces is simply part of the 'rustic novelty'. Game On...?

Missing two black knights
My chess board came missing two black knights, but with what looks like 2 extra black queens instead, as well as 4 extra white queens strangely enough. Is there a way I can get 2 black horses shipped to me so I don't have to return the set? It's a very nice set if it had all the pieces.

Most Unique Gift
I ordered this for my husband who collects unique chess boards. He not only loved it but posted a picture on Facebook and people there loved it and were asking where to get one.
