Becoming a King: The Path to Restoring the Heart of a Man

A refreshingly deep, yet welcoming invite to "more"
I have purchased this book as I watch and follow Wild At Heart and love John Eldredge and the entire team. Morgan and his Wife Cherie are awesome and their podcast Good Soil is awesome and I highly recommend it if you haven't already listened in. They give great insight to the mind, body, soul and heart from a biblical stand point, but also dig deeper into the science behind our physiological responses to the world we live in, and the Father's design in us.I am a female, and I know that this book and most of the podcast from wild at heart are 'geared towards men', but I feel like limiting the shared experience of being human in this fallen world as segregated into these concepts being something only men deal with as a huge disservice to not only the women but the men as well.Having said that, I did buy this book as an exploration into understanding the struggle of what men deal with in their unique journey, as I think it is important for us (both men and women) to make an effort to understand one another. However, women based books and podcasts in ministry fall seriously short in encompassing the multi-faceted struggle and desires of women and what makes us tick. We too need much more than just a feel good group to discuss our "feelings" or new ways to 'serve our husbands' or simple encouragement for raising kids. There is far more destiny interwoven into the feminine side of our Fathers heart that is the women's heart. And I look forward to the day that there are more in depth and raw, real, messy and fierce side of the women's heart discussed and acknowledgment of the deeper struggles of women that are very similar to that of men.By no means am I echoing the very worldly agenda that "women are the same as men" as that is NOT my view in the slightest, but women have a much larger role to play than just being a wife and mother and simply having their "feelings acknowledged" or needing a feel good group to have "socializing with other women". Women have their own fierce battles and are called to much more than the church at large has given them credit. I look forward to when some will rise up and acknowledge that, as almost every single thing that comes out of wild at heart is just as relevant to women as men, so its a bummer to claim its more for men, as to insinuate that women don't struggle with the same deep questions.*Soap box rant over*Becoming a king is a great read and I so appreciate Morgan's invitation into the 'more' that most Christian men and women are looking for. And I believe this will be a gentle, yet real, call to arms for men to arise and fight for the 'more' depth and fierceness their masculine hearts are crying out for.Props to you Morgan, for all your work and heart that has gone into this book, it is so awesome that you are sharing all that God has shown you over the years with others who can benefit from you sharing your blessing and revelations.Cant wait to read a book from his wife Cherie, as she has lots of amazing research and anointing to teach as well!

The Ancient Paths of Masculinity
After just completing my first reading of Morgan Snyder's "Becoming A King" last night, I feel as if I've discovered a long, lost map to the ancient paths of masculinity - not the cartoon or buffoon masculinity of media, TV, or movies. One of the tenets that moved me deeply as I read this amazing and insightful work was that that author actually humbled himself - over decades - to seek out, ask questions and sit at the feet of, and learn from over seventy-five sages who had already found the map, sought out the ancient paths, and surrendered the building of kingdoms over the refining of their character as men of faith. From experience, I know it takes deep wells of both courage and vulnerability to enter such a journey. It's definitely, as he says a few times throughout the pages, "...not easy, cheap, or quick." If the devastating stories of the #MeToo movement have revealed anything, it's that the world is desperate for men who are good, trustworthy, and able to handle power when it is time for them to have it. Wholehearted masculinity cannot be found in an app store, through Google, or anywhere near social media. It is a treasure hunt - and the author invites me and any other man willing to engage the excavation and discovery process of his own spiritual and masculine journey the incredible riches and growth that can come from a deep and honest restoration of everything that has been lost, stolen, or surrendered in the process of being a man.I highly recommend this book, as well, to women who wish and yearn to better understand the men that they love. Morgan Snyder's literary gifts of storytelling and exposition are finely crafted with the realism of experience, the no-varnished truth of disruptive honesty, and the audacity to challenge men into becoming the kind of men that can be entrusted to lead a kingdom. In his discussions of faith and how God calls a man into this process, the author uses many of his own life experiences and the wisdom he learned from sages over a decade or more to illuminate the realities and risks every man will encounter in such wilderness terrain of the heart and soul."What is the most important thing?" For me, I would say that any man who wants to be a "king" (...leader...) or desires to become one would do well just not to read this (...my first pass won't be my last...) but look into the mirror of life - wherever he may be on his journey - and ask the question: "What am I willing to sacrifice in order to find the ancient paths and walk them until I live them?"I look forward to finding the answers. Read this book - and unearth the treasures within. Strength & Honor!!

Powerful
Only two chapters in, I was completely captured by this well written, honest, and impactful book. I spent time with Morgan from across the room many years ago at a Wild at Heart retreat and I am familiar with his work at Ransomed Heart ministries. It is great to see him share the culmination of his life and work in such an approachable and transparent way. Any man would benefit from this book, especially a man seeking to find strength, make a real difference, and know how to truly walk with God. John 10:10 is my favorite Bible verse, but I’ve never been entirely clear as to why. I just know that the idea of a full life in Christ makes something compelling, good, and hopeful arise in me. I know there are no short cuts to such a life, and dealing with weakness and struggle is part of the deal. Morgan outlines the path well, resulting in shared wisdom and actionable steps that can be followed. The intentionality he poured into seeking the counsel of many sages, men older and wiser, results in a tremendous work and calls us to do the same, to engage with God and others.

Restoring the goodness of men.
What a treasure. A field guide. A compass. And a map. The message in this book is so hopeful - that men are good and that the world is in desperate need of good kings. Men who wield power and influence for the good of others, starting with their own world - wives, kids, work. This book needs to be in the hands and get into the hearts of every man. The author goes after the questions "Who have you become as a man?" and "Who are you becoming?". From the Afterword: "Above all else, this book is an invitation. It is an invitation into a process of becoming the kind of man to whom God can entrust his kingdom. The greatest revolution in human history began through 12 men saying yes to a personal invitation from the King of kings to recover the ancient path. It’s not easy, it’s not cheap, and it’s not quick.". Give up the easy, the cheap and the quick. Start with this book.

Impacting and incisive in its honesty.
Having been an avid follower of the Wild at Heart ministry for many years, as well as leading men's groups for over 33 years, my approach to Morgan's book was with a curiosity. Watching his contributions during the Wild at Heart video series, I was already impressed by his passion for the hearts of other men. The first thing to strike me about this contribution is the fact that Morgan has not rushed into writing this book. His passion for his own personal growth and spiritual formation is evidence of his authenticity, and as a 65 year old seasoned pastor, counsellor, pastoral supervisor and coach, I felt privileged to learn from someone who has clearly earned the right to speak into the hearts of the men of this AND previous generations. Thank you for this timely word.

Restoration for the Masculine Soul
From 20 years of sitting at the feet of elders, Morgan faithfully distills the wisdom he has gathered and delivers it in a beautifully romancing way, developing a framework for the restoration of the masculine soul. Both practical and soul orienting, each chapter is an alluring invitation back to the narrow path to become the kind of man that can be entrusted with power in God's Kingdom. This book has been a faithful guide for the past year and I couldn't recommend it more highly. It is a deep, rich well. Meditate on it, read and reread, and implement it in your life and day-by-day you will find yourself slowly being restored to the man God made you to be. This has been my experience so far.

A Stellar Read!
This book is an absolute goldmine ofdivine wisdom and practical truth! The gold is Christ in us, the hope of glory(Colossians 1:27). The gold, however, must be mined, and Morgan challenges Christian men to face the reality that we are as yet unfinished, and must press on to greater healing and sonship!I highly recommend this work to any and all men everywhere who are hungering for an ever deepening relationship and walk with our heavenly Father alongside Jesus Christ, our brother and overshadowed yet in dwelt by the Holy Spirit.
