The Miracle Mile, Brilliance from the historian's hand. Jason Beck soars with this sport history!
Jason Beck's book, " The Miracle Mile" is absolutely outstanding. It covers all the stories of the 1954 Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver with the deft hand of the historian. Every tale is enriched by vivid historical detail and they capture drama and the spirit of the games. These were the games that introduced Vancouver to the world and the world to Vancouver. This is an extraordinary read for sports lover and historian alike. We are swept from day to day with the preparatory work, the struggles towards hosting the games, the planning, the construction and then the games themselves.Every sport and event is revealed by the brilliance of Jason Beck's hand. This is a book for everyone who loves sport, history and the city of Vancouver. It exceeds any other sport book that I have ever read.

A Compelling Narrative and First Class Historical Record. Deserves a wide readership.
The Miracle Mile is a fabulous book. I attended the 1954 British Empires Games and Beck captures the era exactly as I remember it. His narrative of the final day (August 7th) where Islander Terry Tobacco helped Canada win a Silver medal in the 440 relay, Roger Bannister's historic "Miracle" mile against Landy and Jim Peter's heart-breaking finish in the marathon is moving and extremely well written. It is very inspiring and a great read for any athlete, coach or sports aficionado. It's sport writing and history at its very best.

A Milestone Event in Canadian Sports History
What a wonderful volume! It offers a good detailed account of each days results at the 1954 BRITISH EMPIRE and Commonwealth Games, with some back stories about the athletes and operations of the event. The Games could be viewed as a post-war "coming-out-party' of sorts for the City of Vancouver and Canada's participation in the world of international sports. The collection of photographs through out the book are phenomenal as well!
