Couldn't set it up. Unusable and useless. Initiated a return within 6 hrs
I found this product a complete waste of time. Despite all the claims about being able to set it up in 30 seconds, I wasn’t able to connect it at all. Within 6 hours of opening the box I had repacked it all and initiated a return to Amazon. There were a series of problems.1 - Although it is sold as a wireless modem/router, the first use requires the use of a wired connection from the computer, to the router, and then to the phone line signal splitter. This required me to dig out some old cables from a previous computer 15 years ago which were long enough to reach upstairs. Nevertheless, I did manage all the required connections.2. After powering up the router then a “QIS Wizard”, ie quick installation set-up wizard, is supposed to start up automatically. It didn’t for me. For that case the printed quick start guided (supplied in the box) advises to go to a web address instead. That does indeed present an ASUS page asking for a username and password.3. Unfortunately, the values given for the username and password in the quick start guide, ie “admin”, don’t work.4. This ASUS webpage is a different style from the screen shot in the guide, and the webpage mentions an “ASUS router account” to which there is no reference in the guide, so things don't match up between the guide and the screen.5. The screen-shots in the guide are in fact very small and one would need a microscope to read most of the text, so that doesn’t help either.6. The quick start guide mentions an internet connection option “in the user manual”. Unfortunately, that user manual is not supplied, only the quick start guide. If you have better luck than me or are a computer whizz kid then maybe you’ll able to set up this router. I feel there’s a lack of adequate documentation and a badly implemented user interface which unfortunately makes it unusable and useless. It puts me off buying any other ASUS products in the future.

Cheap and cheerful
The broadband function connect fine first time and the connection speed is as good or better than my old Plusnet(BT) router which had become unreliable. I had problems with most of my WiFi devices connecting and then dropping off straight away and was on the point of returning it. I tried a few settings on the WiFi channel and magically the problems were resolved - don't ask me what I changed! Although I think it was the 'extension' channels setting. The admin UI is adequate and usable. The main annoyance is that the network map doesn't show hostnames, so reserving DHCP addresses means checking the DHCP log to find the Mac addresses of devices before going back to the DHCP settings to reserve the address. The other oddity is the scary length of time it takes to apply even simple config changes. But hey, it works well, it was cheap and I don't plan on spending my life configuring it now that it's set up.

ASUS DSL-N16 N300 Wireless Router
Bought this router so I could have the VPN option but didn’t happen, if you want a router to replace what you have then yes it’s a good router for that but for the VPN side then no after being in touch with Asus & with tech support from the VPN you really do need a better one. Setup was a nightmare done from wireless no Ethernet took a while to figure that one out to late now to send it back to Amazon but double check first if you want it for the VPN then don’t get this one

Not for everyone
Bought this to upgrade my ISP router as it was like using a toaster to cook a 20" deep pan pizza. It's a powerful bit of kit for the price I paid (under£20), if you don't know anything about networking and run both WiFi and LAN connections (wired). You will need to setup a DHCP table to stop the IP address from conflicted with each other, for some reason it kept assigning the same IP addresses to LAN and WIFI that caused massive packet conflicts.Once the DHCP is up and running I've had no issues, apart from having to manually input all connection details to every device 15+. Port forwarding is great and system logs are detailed enough for basic diagnostic.I would also recommend checking your firmware is up to date as a known exploit has been found in previous versions.

Don't recommend for UK BT/Plusnet fibre (FTTC / VDSL2) - cannot maintain a connection
Bought to serve as a bridge-mode DSL router to connect to a modern Belkin WiFi 6 Access Point for Plusnet/BT FTTC (VDSL2) broadband. Initially the unit would not sync DSL at all and the internet light refused to illuminate. I updated the firmware, no change. I then also did a factory reset. After that, it would at least sync and the DSL light came on. The max possible speed is not achieved, I suspect because it doesn't support VDSL2 profile 35b (super-vectoring), however the sync speed is acceptable - I'd say 80%-90% of potential. The big problem however is that it the router cannot maintain the DSL connection. Within 24 hours the speed dropped to 0.4mbit and the router had to be rebooted. This kept happening until I gave up and replaced it.If you are looking for a good router for BT/Plusnet fibre (FTTC/VDSL2), I personally recommend the Archer VR600 model instead, an alternative that for me has been perfect. That model supports profile 35b and its recent 2022 firmware update includes improvements to the DSL firmware to improve stability and performance.
