Q: Can this be run off a standard propane gas bottle

I wondered the same thing. Mapp gas burns hotter being a mix but I won't advise, more suggest you do some research first.

Q: can this be used to braze box iron?

No, not high enough temperature to melt the brazing rod, iron got to dull red but that's as high as it went.

Q: What is the highest temperature this torch can reach?

I cannot give you the temperature in degrees but it can be too hot for normal solder plumbing, you have to keep the flame down to the minimum end, but I wish I had this for lead projects I had in the past when normal propane heat was not adequate for lead burning, such that I had to employ mini oxygen-acetylene kit to put enough heat into heavy gauge lead. This torch would have reached the heat levels required I think. Just a guide, hope it helps.
