Many companies label their products as "100% Pure Argan Oil" when in fact those products were diluted with other cheaper oils. This happens because the law allows for pure oils to be diluted with lesser quality oils of up to 49%, meaning that the claim “100% pure” may appear on the bottle label with as little as 51% essential oil. The “100% Pure” phrase, according to the labeling laws, can refer to the purity of the essential oil used to make a product but does not necessarily have to refer to the absolute amount of that oil inside the product bottle. For example, 100% pure argan oil can also contain other cheaper oils. While the argan oil portion inside the bottle is indeed pure, the use of the term purity is only being applied to the ingredients, not the concentration of those ingredients relative to the product. Moreover, even if a product is “pure” in the sense of not being diluted, it is possible that it may still be adulterated with synthetic chemicals for scent, residual pesticides and/or solvents.
