A helpful guide to European trains
We used this Guide for planning a trip to Venice in combination with a separate map of European railways . The Guide was helpful but rather too focussed on several major routes. A good read if you have not travelled on European railways before but you will definitely need a separate European rail map and more information about the cities and stations which are not referred to.

Excellent coffee table book but points you to "real" guides
I expected maps and got full page pictures of cities. I expected detailed maps of particular countries, I got overview maps (Lisbon to Moscow over two pages.I think this was more 60% tourist guide, 40% travel guide. My gut reaction was to send it back and find a better book. In fact I might still do it! It did however point me in the direction of "the man in seat 61". That guy seems much more focused on trains and train travel rather than describing destinations. If you are unsure where you want to go then focus on this as a travel guide to Europe. Should you already know where you want to go this may simply frustrate. Sadly I am two days out of the return window. It is a great coffee table book and as such I would give it five stars! The font is large and double spaced with wide margins, photos are in colour but I am not sure I need a picture of a cafe with the legend: "Above: Parisian cafes are perfect for a drink, a snack or just a spot of people-watching" (page 170) The pages are thick and the pages are sewn rather than glued, it is an impressive book -with the focus firmly on layout and design.Sadly the focus was taken away from informative content.I would have removed all the pictures of cafes or museums and replaced them with maps.I would have forgone the 3D printing into the hardback cover and gone for a tough plastic/fabric cover.I would have reduced the size by 40% and used 10 point font single spaced rather than 14 point double.I would have given detailed info. on specific countries focused on traversing distinct from exploring. My guide would have been smaller, lighter and ideal for a handbag/rucksack and NOT a coffee table book
