Socialism Paperback – 20 Nov. 2020

The trouble, or the advantage, with Mill is that he always tries. and usually succeeds to see both sides of any question. He gives a very convincing argument for Socialism and obviously has a lot of sympathy for the working classes. Then he goes through a quite comprehensive list of various brands of socialism and communism and does a very thorough criticism of each one. He recognises that however idealistic social theories might be they are flawed as is any political theory.He even seems to uderstand some of the weaknesses of human nature which the same cannot be said of all political thinkers or writers.

A good short read for anyone wanting to get contrasting views on the concept of Socialism. As a politics student this book was very informative and provided extra information for my exams/dissertations.

A very interesting book and although an old book it has timeless qualities. A clear view if Socialism is laid out, easy to understand. I would recommend it.

Still as relevant in today's society as it was when first written

What I like about this book is that it is one of very few and early attempts of visualising a way of putting the Marxist theory into practice. Even at this early stage of socialist thinking, Mill realizes that distributing the wealth onto the proletariat will lead to a state of routine work, where there is neither motivation nor anxiety, however he does not realise that this state of routine will devoid performance of excellence. What he realizes though is that this equality in ownership might need to a lack of managerial quality due to lack of extra bonuses for managers, however he turns it around by assuming that those capable of quality management will eventually decide to be in charge for the overall good of the community which includes there's. Mill is overlooking two points here: firstly that people including those most idealistic in them don't tend to do anything without reward whether emotional or monetary; secondly that even if these capable leader decide to take charge who says that the rest of the assumedly less capable community accept their leadership.In spite of disagreeing with Mill, I respect him for being a pioneering thinker in many emancipatory fields.

Worth a read if you want to understand the history and begins of modern Socialism.

Easy to understand and has a flow, although not, apart from a few excerpts, particularly encapsulating, even though I do identify with the ideology.

The book itself is great, good content and good quality. What I supposed to find out is that it’s from the East India Publishing Company. They are a publisher that focuses on literary classics and the books are made right here in the U.S. Very happy coincidence receiving this book from this publisher!!!

Excellent aproach to the genesis of liberal ideasI don't agree with the possibility of their success even in well organized countries.It must be read considering the historical circumstances in the years it was firstly published.

Socialism is much in the headlines of today. For some, an understanding of the subject being discussed is necessary. This is a good source of that understanding.

The print in the paperback is so tiny that one almost needs a magnifying glass to read it. Apart from that, it's a cheap print-to-order paperback, you get what you pay for. The overall quality is good enough, just tiny print.
