History in the making
I loved this book. Even though it was a fictional story,it tells the true story of Kenya. I could not put it down.

And she's done it again! What a read!
I cannot really put into words the way Ms Woods can write, tell and make us live such a wonderful and tragic story. The way the author engages the reader into an amazing tale of a family which settled in the beginning of the 20th century in Kenya following the wave of colonization of the new empires. The story goes through different generations of the Trevertons and explains in detail the relationships the family traces with the native kikuyus. These links will guide the reader through the history of Kenya's struggle and final independence from the British from the words of the characters. Not only is it a journey through historical facts but most importantly it's a family story, a friendship story, a tale of true love and finally of understanding differences and how human beings face them. In case this review is not clear enough I really recommend this book to anyone tbat searches in books more than just a novel.

I enjoyed this particularly as I am a South African
I enjoyed this particularly as I am a South African., although I have travelled widely, I love this country and reading about Kenya was very interesting indeed. One thing I would love to ask Barbara Wood, why was the character of Mona's daughter worried about her mixed blood, there was never a relationship by her Mother, Mona of having had an affair with a Black man. Is there anyway that I would get her address and ask herthat question direct. This is my first reading of Barbara Wood's writing, I am sure to read more of her at a later stage.Back to the book, it hadshades of White Mischief but not the depth of White Mischief..

Lovely description of East Africa
Well-written book that captures the spirit and lightness of Kenya. Also the tribal problems that white settlers had to deal with in the time of Mau Mau.

Wonderful!
Since my original hardbond had fallen apart after loaning it to so many people I bought a replacement. I highly recommend this book. The book starts out in 1917 when the British come to establish an agricultural empire. The story spans many generations.

Green City in the Sun
Planning a trip to Africa , this book was just great. Loved the story and I got a lot of history of Africa while reading it. It is fiction, based on truth of Kenya and the coffee plantations. From 1900- to current times, it is a family story that makes you wish you could meet the characters. I will be sorry when I finish it. Always a surprise coming along. If you want to read about Africa, read this book!

This is a very dense book and took me quite some time to read. It is a romping page turner, spanning several generations and there's enough murder, passion and revenge to last you for a long time! I would say that I found some of the scenarios rather far-fetched but, at the same time, I did find it enjoyable and engaged (on the whole) with the characters. Wood had clearly done her research into the colonial and tribal Kenya and I'm wondering if she spent time living there.

A truly breathtaking novel and an inspiring novelist!
I have never before come across such a detailed, informing and magnificent storyteller. I know Kenya, I know the history but I never believed I would be a part of it as I was when Barbara Wood drew me in and took me on her historical journey. I'm looking forward to reading another of her books!

You won't be able to put it down
I read this book years ago and when I saw it was available for the Kindle I couldn't resist it. It is one of the best books I have ever read. Not only is there a good story running through it but there is also an insight into African history. It's not a quick read so once you start make sure you have plenty of time to finish it because you won't want to put it down.

Fantastic
After being recommended to read this book, by a friend. I am so pleased I did. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire story from beginning to end. I was completely drawn into the very colourful life in Kenya. Descriptions made you feel you were there. I shall definitely be reading more of Barbara Wood.
