Q: Do you need just one per line or two per line?

Just one, you tie a knot at the bottom and run the rope thru the float so it holds it and then run the other end thru the fender grip as it looks like in the picture so then you can either pull or release to make the float go up or down depending on the height of the dock. It was a little spendy but it's totally worth it, I looked at others about half the price and it was much more difficult to adjust or they slipped off. This securely holds it in place without the rope slipping down and you can mount it to pretty much anything because it taps around with the rope. One thing you'll need to do is take the fender grip to the store with you when you get your rope tho so you get the right size rope, too big wont with thru and too small will slide out without the grip being able to lock it in place. I paid $20 each last year and I got 2, $15 for them now is not a bad deal either

Q: How would you hook it up to a cleat?

Hi Dawn, to use the Fendergrip on a cleat, form a large loop at the top and place the loop around the horns of the cleat; the Fendergrip will lay on its side next to the cleat. Hope this helps! Peter Cook, President of New World Marine, Inc. inventor of the Fendergrip.
