A new winner for the ultra budget emergency radio category.
The Slive-4U AM FM Stereo Weather Band emergency radio is a great portable to keep handy when hostile weather conditions develop. I am very impressed with this radio, from the build quality to the reception, and price tag.Search my name and model number of the radio on Youtube for an in-depth video review.Features I like about this radio:* Sturdy build quality.* Easy to Tune.* AM reception is perfect for an emergency radio.* FM reception is solid.* Good NOAA weather band reception.* FM Stereo on headphones, sweet.* Headphone audio is pleasing to listen to, with no low level hiss.* Speaker audio is crystal clear.* Dual brightness controls for the LED.* Siren Mode.* Dynamo.* Optional AAA battery use.* Internal NiMH battery can be changed.* USB charging output.* USB bridge tech.Features that could be added or improved on:* Better AM selectivity at night.* Yellow color! or Red.* Higher capacity battery, like the 18650.Overall, I found a new winner for the ultra budget emergency radio category. The Kaito Voyager 2 used to be on that list but the price has crept up on that one. This radio doesn't have a solar panel, but that is fine by me. Keeps the radio at a slimmer profile making it easy to grab on the run, and easy to store to be prepared when you need it.

Failure is not an option.
I purchased the expensive item because it was suppose to be an emergency radio. Had it been an emergency, I would have been SOL. The emergency radio did not work. It was fully charged and failed. Quality control should have flagged the problem and corrected it, especially since it was suppose to be for emergency situations. I do not recommend this product because it failed when needed.

Adaptable Emergency Radio
Note: if you choose to buy this radio, be sure to read the sticker on the back for instructions on hooking up the permanent battery. This is omitted in the instruction pamphlet and is required for operation. The oddly named SLIVE 4U emergency radio is a paragon of adaptability. It is a flashlight, a multiband radio, a charging stand and a siren all optionally powered by an internal generator / re-chargeable batteries. I’ll take these items one by one.Power: can come from two sources. The internal ‘permanent’ battery which charges either with the crank or through a standard 5 v cell phone / tablet charger. In addition, you can add 3 AAA batteries. There is a manual switch to control which of these sources you draw from.Battery life: I charged the permanent batteries up full and then did a rundown test of the radio. After six hours, the radio was still going strong. I then plugged an iPhone 6 in to the charger. I got from 70% charge to 81% charge and then the SLIVE 4U’s low battery light came on. It stopped charging the phone. I turned the radio back on and it played fine.Note: this isn’t a full on charging station, but will work only to give a few minutes talk or browse time on a portable device. Three AAA batteries will barely charge a full size tablet and will be half exhausted (at least) if asked to charge a cell phone from flat. Of course you can crank for more power but the small hand crank gets tiresome quickly.Cranking: the small handle and short radius of the crank make for a tiresome crank early on. A few minutes cranking did charge the permanent batteries enough to pick up a weather report or listen to a new flash so that’s good.Radio: the radio is reminiscent of those you can find in an antique store having goods from the 1950’s. The sound is adequate for weather or AM voice but a bit scratchy for music. It sounds almost identical to a portable radio I bought 15 years ago for $8 new. The tuning is an analog bar (fitting with the antique theme) which makes for slow and inexact tuning. After having used digital tuners exclusively for many years, I found the analog annoying, slow and I often got on the wrong station. To make matters worse, the tuning bar isn’t lighted so you tune in the dark by gosh and by golly.Flashlight: is a single white LED with two settings, high and low. The output is roughly on par with a cell phone. You can use it to find keys but forget doing a search and rescue mission with it.Siren: works but I’m unsure what use one could put it to. The dB level isn’t more than a normal person can shout. Conclusion: this works but could work better. Replacing the AAA with AA’s would drastically increase the utility of this as a radio and also as a charging station – the capacities are that different. Mostly though, the analog slow roll unlit tuning bar was, after years of lit digital, a major disappointment. Add a lit digital tuner and my rating goes up a star.
