Mild Pu Erh, not powerful.
At USD$27âśÂ˛, this is not the cheapest Pu Erh; all the more so,when you consider that 100g is less than a quarter of a pound (see photo). But I keep looking for that powerful Pu Erh aroma, ever since I movedto the US, from Chile, last year. This is still not it. Many tea commentatorsderide those of us who seek that redolence of garden compost, but that,to me, is the thrill of a âgoodâ Pu Erh. I bought this, prompted by a reviewerwho warned us of the âfishy smell and bitterness of a bad pu'er.âThat is certainly not what I found. Not bad tea, but mild.Several reviewers complain that the cake is too hard to break up.It is harder than most, agreed, but that has such a simple solution:leave the ânestâ overnight in a large cup, with a tiny amount of water![After that, of course, you have three or four days to consume itbefore it molds (moulds), unless you dry it again:sunlight, microwave, whatever.]

Sparky goodness
I have been drinking this tea every week since purchase. I have brewed it in a portable gong-fu filter/decanter at work discarding the first cup as per tradition.1. The tea was as pictured if not a little darker2. I use a good amount per brew session (> 3g)3. The water I used was Kentwood water using 3 parts hot and 1 part cold to normalize the temperatureThe first several brews are quite flavorful and actually a little overpowering, prompting me to under-steep the first 3 or so. I find the flavor is best when the color of the liquor is only lightly honey (or for those technically inclined, about #efe7a8) for these first brews. Afterwards the flavor drops steeply, prompting a normal-to-over-steep where the color is a deep honey, of course this is all purely subjective. If I had to sum up the tasting notes in a single sentence, I would describe it as a seaside, earthy blend width a semi-dry finish. That kind of belies the almost fishy aftertaste that comes with some raw pu-erh that I've been warned is a sign of poor quality. However, as I'm not yet expert in the field of tea, it does not bother me especially as the caffeine or tea-high from this brew is substantial. The effects from drinking 4 cups of gong-fu brewed tea is delightful. A fun sort of airy feel with a cerebral effect and a calm clarity. Any more than this has given me an off-balance feeling leading into a headache if I push it.I hope this helps others to identify whether they would like this or not, although this is purely subjective, I tried to present as much as possible objectively.

doesn't smell, look or taste like any pu ehr I've had in almost 30 years of drinking pu ehr
I've been drinking Pu Erh tea for over 25 years. I've tried different grades, different vendors. Some I like better than others, some not so much, but until this time I've never had a Pu Erh tea that didn't have so much as a hint of the flavor I associate with Pu Erh. Straight from the bag this doesn't smell like Pu Erh. When brewed it doesn't have the deep reddish brown color pu ehr tea usually has. Adding insult to injury this is one of the more expensive pu ehr teas I've purchased. A complete and total rip off. I won't be buying from ValleyofTea again.

Average at the best
I am a big fan of the Pu-Erh tea in the cake form. I like both types Shu and Sheng. Depending on the mood, time of the day, etc.I brew the tea in YiXing teapot (200 ml). This Shu Pu-Erh cake has next to none aroma.Good earthy taste, something I like in Shu type of Pu-Erh tea.Unfortunately, it doesn't survives more than 3 steeps. The 4th steeping is almost flavourless.3 steeps - 3 stars.

Impossible to break
The taste is ok but to my taste it's too earthy, I expected to have a bit of sweetness as described. I bought other pu ehr teas and they were sweet indeed. The most disappointing part is that it's just impossible to break a piece. I had to use a knife and even with a knife, it's really difficult to cut a piece.I may be mistaken but a few years ago I bought another pu ehr from this brand and it was fantastic and easy to break, that's why I assumed this one will be the same but it wasn't. Won't be buying again unfortunately :(

Delicious tea but hard to break the piece
Itâs probably my fault I though it will be few smaller cakes rather than a big one - is not that easy to break it unless you skilled with this type of tea other than that I love the flavor. I would give 5 stars if I donât have to fight with the cake every time when I was the tea.

Large brick, old, weak. Large brick, old, pathetically weak.
What should be one of the strongest teas with a deep purple color, dark enough to be unable to see the bottom of the mug, is like light colored water. The flavour and aroma are no better.Pu-erh often comes in packed bricks but this is a 100g brick that requires chiseling. After the second try, steeping for five minutes, and still getting weak tea, I noticed that the harvest date is 2008. This is not red wine that ages wonderfully.Whoever sold this tea should be embarrassed.

Avoid. Not a quality product.
The fishy smell and bitterness of a bad pu'er. Avoid. Also if you didn't know how to prepare pu'er, beware mine didn't come with any instructions as promised. No fruitiness, just wood and earth. And fish.No return available this is a ripoff.
