Teaching English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) to adult professionals already living immersed in an English-speaking country can sometimes get tricky. These students are already using the language to their given capacity, much of which is textbook-type grammar stuff. When I found The Slangman Series, it was an answer to prayer because it teaches students how to understand and use idioms/slang. My students were a bit worried when they saw the title; thinking that they would be learning rude or vulgar phrases. Unfortunately, the mayority of textbooks that offer American English idioms/slang focus on Business terms and/or rude or vulgar phrases. FINALLY, with this series, something decent and current that can offer playful, yet very useful, lessons!

This book is really interesting! There are many pictures, which makes you remember the idioms easily and is funny at the same time! I love all the series! I recommend!

本書はアメリカンスラングの辞典であるとともに、アメリカ英語の発音教本である。アメリカ人が日常使うスラングを設定した場面ごとに会話形式で収録している。単にスラングを羅列した他書とは違い、これなら記憶するのも容易である。また、本書の特徴はネイティブが自然な速さで発音する際に起こる音の脱落やリエゾンといった現象について解説していることである。これは音声学の範疇に属することだが、学問的な理論ではなく実際に起こる音の変化を具体的に説明しているので容易に理解できる。これによりCD（別売り）を漠然と聞いて単純にそれを真似て発音するという従来の学習方法から脱却し、音の繋がりを正しく理解した上で発音練習をすることが可能になる。和書には音声学に基づいた正しい発音方法を解説していないものが多い。著者の個人的な体験に基づいた胡散臭い発音方法を教えたり、付録のCDを聞くだけで発音がよくなるなどと謳ういいかげんなものが多い中で、本書のような教材は貴重である。
