The Book of Shadows : The Unofficial Charmed Companion

While I can't prove it my sense is that Charmed is at least partly responsible for the revival in popular interest in all things Ouija. In the opening episode it was a spirit board that led the sisters to the discovery that they are the Charmed Ones. But that wasn't just any spirit board; the board used in nearly every season of the show is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful boards I have ever seen. From the first moment I laid eyes on it, I had to have one.I own one of the "official" replicas and I am not happy with it but the "Charmed Board" launched an entire genre of spirit boards. Like Wicca itself the board appears older than it is and made almost supernaturally from a single cut of wood.The show has major Ouija appeal but beyond that it is a fun and addicting show. They make some huge faux pas. For instance, I cringe every time the sisters say they are going to scry to find something or someone and then they dowse. Their world view, particularly when it comes to the dichotomy of good and evil, leans more to the Judeo/Christian tradition than the Wiccan. But hey it's a fun television show and like all fiction it creates its own world with its own rules.As a fan I have picked up a number of books about Charmed, some fiction, some non-fiction, even comic books but of all the books I have read The Unofficial Charmed Companion by NE Genge had the most lasting impact on me.I have a complete library of books on Wicca and witchcraft but the techniques in what I will call "The Companion" are like nothing I have ever seen before. The book presents as a simple commentary on Charmed but along the way the author gives her readers one of the most concise and clearly explained introductions to witchcraft as any I have encountered.In one section she gives instructions for the use of the Ouija that I have never seen anywhere else and I have some fifty odd books on Ouija and spirit boards. In my opinion, this brief two-page instructional is worth the price of the book but the author gives is so much more.NE Genge covers all the basics of the craft in a non-sectarian way. After covering basic tools and their proper use including Ouija, she covers spell work in detail. Then in section five, "The Observant Witch," she provides a commentary on every episode of the first two seasons. There were eight seasons of the series and I wish NE Genge would update this work to include her commentary on every episode but what she does with the first two seasons is give her readers an education. Her "magical notes" on each episode provide an indispensable insight into the real magical lessons of each episode.It would be easy to overlook this book. Maybe you don't like Charmed; maybe you have never watched a single episode. It doesn't matter. This is a great book even if you are not a fan. If your inclination is magical this is a book you should not pass up.Much love,David

My wife is a big fan of the original Charmed series. This year for her birthday I got her this book, she loves it. I’m honestly giving a good review in fear of my wife using spells from it on me . . . Gotta be careful these days.

GREAT BOOK!!! First off all, if your a reader & you enjoyed the show Charmed, then I advise you to purchase this book, it goes deeper into the knowledge behind the show & if your a practicing Wicca, like myself then you'll really enjoy this book. There are places within the book inwhich you can write your own experiences & such & there are chapters within the book that help you better understand the knowledge & practices & what made the show such an success!

I bought this as a gift, and although I never got a chance to read it personally, I was told that it's a wonderful companion to the show and has a lot of great information in it.Either way, it looks nice and fancy on the bookshelf.

I am a die hard Charmed fan and my daughter has recently through re-runs caught the bug,so I ordered this book for her birthday assuming it would be like the "Book of Shadows" on the show. I expected pictures and descriptions of demons and things and the spells they'd cast on the show. It did have some of the spells, and a lot of information on the wiccan religion but, not a demon or ghost in sight. While I find wicca interesting if I wanted a book about it I'd have ordered one on the subject. In it's favor if your'e interested in the craft or in behind the scenes information on the show you'd like the book but, it's not the companion book the title suggests.

Such great condition! It's such a great book. I would absolutely recommend this book to any Charmed lover! It's such a good book about the show and the spells that they used but also tells you why and what the spells are used for!

I don't understand how the 1 star people could be disappointed. It does not claim to be a "Book of Shadows" replica. the description clearly states, and I quote, "The ultimate guide to the hit program Charmed, this is both a book of spells and a key to the mysteries of the show. The Book of Shadows celebrates the best of Charmed, from its roots in the ancient tradition of Wicca to insider information on the show's stars." And this it does very well indeed, although it does not cover the complete series. If anyone is looking for an exact replica of the "Book of Shadows" as used in the TV series, they should get the Charmed Book of Shadows replica by Julia Caroline Scott which came out in May of 2016. I have a copy and it is excellent. See my review of it.

This is a great purchase for any charmed fan. It's not quite the book of shadows that you see from the series, but references to the series are great and a whole chapter on the remiders of the first two episodes. A must have and highly recommended.

This was a gift for my Niece and so far I think she really likes it because it compliments her dvd collection of Charmed.This item arrived well in advance so I was able to give it to her for her birthday.
