The Invisible Masterpiece

amazing
Not many art historian discuss the idea of invisibility and the concept of masterpiece. The two are tightly related conceptually and are significant in the mindset of the art makers. This is a very important book that will open people's eyes on what is going on in the artist's mind and their struggle to achieve the impossible. I believe that Belting has put out there the most essential points of art making throughout history.

A great thinker of our times
Hans Belting is one of the great thinkers of our time. His work, that goes across medieval art to contemporary art is a rare mix of erudite studies and philosophical and aesthetic theory.I think, as someone who works in the same fields, that belting is a gigantic figure that no student or writer in History and Theory of Art should ignore, and that this particular book is a major achievement only comparable in terms with some works by Ernst Gombrich, Panofsky, Saxl and very few others. We should be proud to be his contemporaries.
