Everything in its Right Place: Analyzing Radiohead

Over my head but still worth it
I’m not a musician and clearly not part of the target audience for this book. But I am a HUGE Radiohead fan, and while much of it was over my head I still learned a lot and gained even more respect for the band and its music. This is not the stuff you’d find in Rolling Stone or other music magazines/websites. The author is definitely not some amateur fan; he knows his stuff and I gained enormous respect for him.I got the paperback version and for me at least, the best thing about it is it makes a great coffee table book. It certainly dispels any notion that Radiohead is just another rock band. They are truly musical geniuses.

Loved it, though it does help to know some music theory
This is an awesome book that certainly increased my respect for and understanding of Radiohead and their music. That said, it does go into some chordal analyses and it does help to have an understanding of music theory, which I do. I highly recommend this book but you should be committed to wanting to better understand the music,

Takes the band with sufficient seriousness but it's introduction is highly misleading. Author claims that you need to read music to get something from text. This is absurd. Not only is musical literacy an absolute requirement for large sections of the text, the section on Timbre requires that you have the familiarity with EDM tech that only a professional musician might have. Suffice it to say that I have read texts on string theory that I have gotten more out of than this work.

Phenomenal Content, Excellent Organization!
This is a really great book. It's organized into chapters based on musical characteristics: form, rhythm and meter, timbre, and harmony and voice leading. For that reason, it introduces concepts that can be applied to music by other artists. I'm definitely assigning it as a required text the next time I teach Analysis of Popular Music at the college level.

Is this a peer-reviewed journal?
Oh my God, this guy is so pretentious. I have a doctorate in an unrelated field, and I cannot understand some of the simplest concepts because he goes out of his way to use the biggest words he can find. I think a lot of germs would reject this because it is unnecessarily jargony. If you’re really that insecure that you have to word things like that to share how smart you are, you should not be writing books for the general population.

Amazing book
This is a truly remarkable book. It is one of these things that you can not believe how good it is.

Very Good
I don't have the basic music theory to understand some of the parts, but if you're interested in understanding the music, a Radiohead fan and a music nerd, you'll love this book. Realizing and counting the rhythms of songs is enjoyable. To get an idea about the book and the author, you can check the video on YouTube where he discusses his book and Radiohead.
