Easy prep.
My garden furniture was dull and old looking with very small patches of rust. I washed it all with a household cleaner similar to Flash. Then I rinsed it and then washed it again with a bleach solution, to ensure all the green algae was killed off, and rinsed again. When dry I rubbed the rust with a light sand paper and gave it 3 coats of spray paint. I suggest using a mask because I guess this stuff is bad to inhale. The end result was brilliant. Looks like new. I did use 5 cans of paint for table and 4 chairs but worth every penny. Very pleased.

Spray - works well
I bought smooth dark green to paint heavy iron bench ends and tbh, it looks great. I was nearly put off by some of the reviews on here, but what you have to remember is that spray paint has got to be thin to spray and do expect to apply several light coats with drying in between. This is how to get a smooth even finish and avoid runs. If you want to paint cheaply you are probably better off with a tin as you will get more coverage for your buck. Personally, I think the results of the spray are great and justify the little extra cost.

Coverage
Well what you see is ten tins of spray paint. Two coatings on the fittings and the 12 short pipes 50cm, three coats on the 6 long ones 108cm. All 38mm.Round objects need more paint than flats because of the amount of overspray or less overspray, more runs.Been curing for 6 days in a very hot room, leave a another week or until no thumb nail marks.Hard to the touch but know as soon as I twist that pipe, disaster. So I'll wait. All part of a steam punk planter made out of cut up pallets. Will post pics when done.Go on the hammerite website and learn about the paint. Know how is everything, poor excuses are just that.

Expensive but excellent
I've read bad reviews about this spray paint but like everything if you take shortcuts you're wasting your time and money. Do as it says, shake can ( I walk about with a can in my pocket before giving it a good shake) spray in thin coats and give the paint time to get tacky before recoating i.e. don't try and put it on too thick. This paint is thinned down for spraying so it will run if you apply too much too quickly - too much also slows drying time. Make sure everything is clean and dry and that you have made provision to be able to pick up the object when it's wet or leave until it's touch dry - that depends on temperature but you should leave for 24hrs for max hardness. I use this on my garden furniture and that sits outside 24/7 and I estimate 3 or 4 years before they need doing again.Top tip - when you.ve prepped something that's already been painted before - spray any / all areas that have lost paint or is bare metal first - give these areas several light coats before painting the whole thing

I have used Hammerite for years. I works very well on metal garden furniture rusty or not. I decided to get the spay version this time to refurbish a couple of cast iron garden tables as it is much quicker and easier to apply to complicated shapes.
