You will know when it tests positive
Very helpful tool to determine safety in old items I’ve found at the antique store. (Going to test on Shein clothes next.) The description of the starting test color is a little misleading, which may be confusing at first, until you get a positive result and it changes dramatically. The instructions say it will start mustard yellow, but it will be more like an orange yellow. It will turn dark red when it tests positive. I found a couple of items that tested positive, and thankfully I hadn’t really used them yet.

Detects Lead in paint
Works as it says. It stays same color if no lead and turns dark maroon when rubbed on lead paint. Simple and quick.

Easy to Use
I’ve never gotten a positive result. So I really hope the test results are accurate. Definitely easy to use.

Quick, easy, and no mess!
We had a couple of old doors that we thought were probably lead paint but we weren't sure. I swabbed the first door and within 10 seconds the entire tip of the swab turned bright pink. It was quick and easy to use and accurate. After finding out they were both lead paint we were able to take the proper precautions to strip and repaint the doors. I love that this kit comes with multiple strips that we can use to test other items in the future.

False positives
This lead test kit seems to be fairly useless. I followed the instructions, running water on the swab until it turned yellow, then rubbing it on the paint I wanted to test. It turned a violet-red color, so I assumed there was lead (which surprised me because a 3M lead test kit had said there wasn't lead in paint nearby). Then I decided to test another spot. This time, I noticed the swab was starting to turn purple as I carried the swab from the sink to the painted trim. I was getting a bit confused, so I tried just dampening a swab and watching it without swabbing anything. This swab turned dark purplish red as well.At this point, I was wondering if my water was just loaded with lead. So I grabbed an unopened bottle of pure, filtered water and poured it on a swab. Guess what? That one turned purple too.

Not for ceramics
Found out after purchasing these that only a $10,000 machine can detect lead in ceramics. Amazon description says works on ceramics but package says otherwise. Returned.

Works!
I made my husband order these to test some old shutters I bought at a flee market. I didn’t think about it at all until we got home and realized they might have been painted with lead paint. Turns out they weren’t and it was great to have the peace of mind.
