Im ersten Kapitel werden kurz die Vorgängerschiffe besprochen und abgebildet. Danach erfolgt die Dienstzeit der Essex-klasse im Zweiten Weltkrieg, Korea und Vietnam sowie den Friedenszeiten. Die wichtigsten Bordflugzeuge werden gezeigt und die meisten Fotos der Schiffe waren mir nicht schon bekannt. Die Texte dazu sind gut und natürlich ist das Ganze auf Englisch.

Volumi sintetici, riccamente illustrati che affrontano capitoli a volte di nicchia della storia militare moderna. Testi sintetici ma ben documentati, foto non sempre perfette, ma fatte spesso sul campo di battaglia da dilettanti con macchine tascabili. In formato kindle (specie in offerta) costano poco e si possono zoomare le foto su un tablet grande. Imperdibili per gli appassionati. Che altro ?

「Images of War」シリーズはその名の通り各テーマを写真などのビジュアル中心に掘り下げていくというものです。今回の「Essex Class Aircraft Carriers」は第二次大戦期から戦後にかけて米海軍の中心として活動した米エセックス級計24隻を扱った書籍です。レジュメ内容はChapter One　：US Navy Aircraft Carrier Development, 1919-41（Ｐ1～19）Chapter Two ：Essex Class Enter Service（Ｐ20～36）Chapter Three ：Across the Pacific（Ｐ37～48）Chapter Four ：Aboard the Essex Class（Ｐ49～67）Chapter Five ：Through Kamikaze to Victory（Ｐ68～88）Chapter Six ：The Post-war Era and Korea（Ｐ89～116）Chapter Seven ：Steam and Mirrors（Ｐ117～136）Chapter Eight ：Submarines, Spacecraft and Vietnam（Ｐ137～154）Chapter Nine ：Postscript（Ｐ155～162）以上単艦ごとではなく時系列掲示による内容となっており、図面は無く既発表のものが多いながらもキャプションが充実した鮮明な写真中心です。特に戦後の改修や艦種変更など希少価値がある情報も結構取り上げており多数艦、長期間ながらもよくまとめられている良い書籍だと思います。設備、技術的な情報がほとんどないのが残念ですが、ボリューム的に仕方ないことかもしれません。エセックス級については幾多の書籍がありながら行動歴が中心で、構造などの図面資料が比較的少なく「TECHNICAL and OPERRATIONAL HISTORY Essex Class Carriers in WWⅡ」（Trojca社2011/1）や「Aircraft Carrier Intrepid (Anatomy of the Ship)」（Naval Inst Pr社1982/12）などに留まっているのが少し残念です。

The book is nice and gives an overview of the vessels of this class.Nevertheless I only gave three stars as the pictures are in majority outside overview shots. I was expecting more detailed pictures especially from the inner rooms, engine spaces, living quarters as well as pictures taken during construction of the ships.Therefore I am a little disappointed.
