good for startling
I carry this when I walk my two cane corso (Italian mastiff) to ward off any loose dogs (irresponsible people, strays, losts). My dogs will bite strange dogs that are loose and approaching us, so I carry this to stop the loose dog before my dogs can react.....inevitably even though MY dogs are LEASHED and under CONTROL as the law requires, they will most certainly be blamed because of their looks (big and blocky). It is not fair, but I have to take the right precautions to protect MY dogs from idiots who let their dogs run loose. I rarely even walk in my own neighborhood because people's dogs run right out of their yards....it is frustrating and ridiculous. I have only had to use this once, and while it DID stop the dog (I have horrible aim, and did NOT hit it on the nose as you are supposed to but instead hit her forehead) and the dog ran away momentarily, she did return. Luckily I was in MY OWN YARD when this happened and was able to get in my front door before the dog had the guts to rush us again (she stayed about 5 feet away). This is meant to startle and deter a dog, and will NOT harm them...which is why this is my first choice of defense. I dont want to hurt another dog as it is not their fault that their owners' are irresponsible idiots. BUT that being said, I also carry pepper spray JUST IN CASE the citronella does not stop and the dog is aggressive (Pepper spray can spray back on YOU or your DOGS, so be very careful...which is hard when all of this happens in an instant. And in some cases pepper spray will actually aggrivate an aggressive dog MORE). And in the event that I am truely scared for MY OWN personal safety from a charging aggressive dog, then pure lead is my third option.....and I hope to never encounter any. I would not rely on this as protection, just a detterrant to give YOU time to get away.

Good spray, but cap falls off
I have purchased and carried 3 cannisters of SprayShield now over the last 4 years. I agree that it would not stop an aggressive bad dog on its own, but I have found that between my own obedience training, assertive stance and vocal commands, PLUS this spray, I have fended off some pretty crazy attack attempts. I would almost say that this spray just gives me the confidence to ward off the attack. It also helps that this is not pepper spray - I've had to talk down angry owners who seem to think their poorly trained, dog aggressive pets should go around our neighborhood for off-leash walks. How is it that so many dog owners just don't respect everyone else? The only beef I have with SprayShield is that it costs over $10 and, after 9 or 10 months of carrying it around, invariably the spray cap pops off when I'm on a walk and not aware of it. The cannister is completely useless without the spray cap. So I have to buy a new cannister simply so I can use it. Very annoying. The cap on HALT! is much better - you'd have to crack it with a hammer to get it off the cannister. In the end, I'll keep buying SparyShield... I just wish they'd improve their product design.

Is as advertised.
This product works awesome for my pitbull. She is the most lovable dog until it comes to my dutch Shepherd. They get a long good, but there are those few times when our pitbull becomes to aggressive toward her. One spray of this product is all it takes. Now when she gets in the mode of being not nice we only show her the can and the behavior problem is done. She has never hurt the other one, but we were concerned about it, so my husband found this on Amazon and the rest is history. We will buy this again if we ever had a need for it. The can we have, paid for itself after one use and also protected both dogs from a very serious injury.

Works great for big time behavior issues
This is not just for warding off dogs. This is a great tool for training your own dog. As a behaviorist I have used it to stop that very persistent boxer from jumping on people, the rottweiler from barking it's head off at everyone who passes --- just hide the can in your sleeve, the next time your pooch does the thing that you just can't live with, give him a squirt, and he will not being doing that behavior for long. Best of all, he's not mad at you! You don't have to yell or heaven forbid, spank anymore! Not once have I made it through a whole can for one dog, one behavior. It usually only takes three times or so catching them in the act. Love this stuff. One star is missing only because it's not really affective on agressive behaviors -- you have to go to something a little stronger for that.

IT Works
I carry this when walking whether I have my own dog with me or not. It was recommended by a trainer that does obedience classes and some in home training. We have a demented terrier mix (I believe he is a cross of a Jack Russell terrier and Satan) He usually stays in his own front yard, off leash of course, and is content to bark, snarl and mock charge people walking their dogs on the street in front of his house. EXCEPT, this day he decided to charge me and my female Golden Retriever, growling, barking, snarling, coming strait at my dog. I yelled at him, to no avail, of course, pulled out the Direct Stop and sprayed in front of him (lucky enough to have the wind at my back carried the scent of the spray to him, not on him) The terrirzer came to a complete stop, turned and ran back to his house, looking over his shoulder to make sure I wasn't coming after him with more of that really yucky stuff. We continued on our way, I have not seen him off his front porch, nor heard him carry on since that day. My Golden is a big girl and could have seriously injured him if not for the Direct Stop deterring him from his suicide by golden, mission.Would it stop a trained police dog, doubt it, but for your average, fear or terriorial aggressive dog, yes it worked. I've had reports from other users of it's effectiveness. Best thing it does not injure the dog, no risk to yourself of blowback and great for people with a multidog household (spats can break out among the best of dogs) joggers, walkers, bike riders.According manufacturer also works on raccoons and snakes. So if you have a raccoon hanging around why expose yourself or loved one to rabies and other diseases, make him want to go elsewhere. Take it with you where ever you go and enjoy being outdoors again! It's peace of mind in a spray canister!!!
